This thesis is about the necessity and quality of the vocabulary annotations for Korean literature reading as a part of Korean language education. Recently, the number of foreign students studying Korean studies has been increased and there are even overseas university departments focusing on Korean studies. Consequently, they started considering Korean literature not only a tool for Korean language studies but also a proper study subject. They believe students should study Korean literature properly as it is. There are even studies on leveraging culture education for better understanding of Korean literature. To understand Korean literature properly, it’s important to understand vocabularies as well as culture and social background. There are already a number of studies proving that vocabulary annotations are effective for students to understand literature texts and study vocabularies and most Korean textbooks today include vocabulary annotations. However, it’s not clear how to select the necessary vocabulary annotations. Also, these annotations say only dictionary definitions, which can’t enable students to understand literature texts properly as annotations should cover cultural and symbolic definitions within the texts as well. Therefore, there should be additional essential annotations covering social/cultural or symbolic definitions in the texts for better understanding of Korean literature. These additional vocabulary annotations can be a great guides for students and professors in Korean literature and Korean language studies.

본 논문은 한국어교육에서 문학 읽기를 위한 어휘 이해의 방안으로 어휘 주석의 필요성과 내용에 관한 연구이다. 최근 해외에서 한국학으로 접근하는 학과와 학습자들이 생기고, 학문목적 학습자들이 증가하면서 문학을 단순히 도구적 읽기 제재로 활용하는 것을 넘어서는 접근들이 생기기 시작했다. 즉, 문학을 그 자체로 학습해야 한다는 관점과 그와 관련한 작품 감상법으로서 문학교육 이론을 적용하는 연구 등이다. 이런 연구들은 결국 문학 텍스트 그 자체에 집중하여, 잘 읽어내고 감상하도록 하는 것에 초점을 둘 수밖에 없다. 이를 위해 작품의 문화배경 지식을 아는 것도 필요하지만, 작품에 쓰인 어휘의 의미를 제대로 이해하는 것도 그에 못지않게 중요하다. 어휘 주석이 읽기 텍스트 이해와 어휘 학습에 효과적이라는 연구는 많다. 한국어 교재도 대부분 어휘 주석을 달고 있다. 그러나 기존 교재의 어휘 주석들은 어떤 기준으로 선정했는지 명확하지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 내용도 사전적 의미만을 담고 있다. 이것으로는 문학 텍스트를 제대로 이해하기 어렵다. 어휘가 내포하고 있는 문화적ㆍ상징적 의미까지 이해해야 제대로 읽을 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 문학 텍스트를 이해하기 위해 필수적인 어휘들, 즉, 맥락 안에서 상징적인 의미를 가지고 있거나, 사회ㆍ문화적 의미를 내포하고 있는 어휘들을 선정하여 그 내용을 담는 어휘 주석을 추가하고자 한다. 이런 어휘 주석들이 추가된다면 한국어 학습자들이나 교수자들에게 문학 읽기와 수업을 위한 지침서 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다.
