Bohai is an ancient country which had dominant forces in the northern part of the Korean peninsula and Manchuria region for about 200 years. From the perspective of Bohai history, regarding Bohai as a part of Korean history or Chinese history is the biggest issue. However, it is not widely known that Bohai and Japan had envoys sent to each other. Bohai sent envoys to Japan 34 times and Japan to Bohai 16 times. Also envoys of Bohai had written many Han poems in Japan. Those poems currently remain Japanese historical books and the collection of Han poems and these facts not widely known either.And in Japanese ancient novels, there are many characters from Bohai. In those novels, Bohai people exchange Han poems with protagonists or give names to them. This means that Bohai people are described as figures with authorities. This paper is going to analyse actual Han poems written by Bohai people and how those poems are regarded by Japanese.　Also this paper is going to discuss how Bohai people were described in the ancient novels.　Furthermore, by evaluating the above mentioned topics, this paper is going to find out what Bohai meant to Japanese and how Bohai had influenced Japanese literature.

한반도 북부과 만주에서 약 200여 년에 걸쳐 큰 위력을 떨쳤던 고대국가 발해(渤海)는 현재 그 정체성 을 놓고 한국과 중국이 첨예하게 대립하고 있는 상황이다. 그런데 이 발해가 일본과 활발한 교류를 하 며 발해에서 일본으로는 34회, 일본에서 발해로는 16회에 걸쳐 사신단을 파견하였고, 그 흔적이 현재 일본의 역사서와 한시문집 그리고 일본장편소설에 남아 있다는 것에 대해서는 아직 많은 연구가 진행 되지는 않았다. 일본의 한시문집에는 발해에서 일본으로 파견된 사신들이 지은 한시들이 다수 남아 있다. 그리고 그들 의 한시는 당시 그들을 맞이한 일본의 문인으로부터 아낌없는 찬사를 받았다. 특히 발해인들을 맞이한 일본문인은 발해인들이 아름다운 한시를 끊임없이 전해준다고 한시에 써서 남겼는데, 이는 발해와 일 본의 교류가 일본문학에 미친 영향력을 그대로 언급한 것이라는 점에서 의의가 매우 높다. 또한 일본 장편소설에는 발해인이 많이 등장한다. 그들은 주인공의 이름을 짓고 주인공의 미래를 예언 하며 그리고 주인공과 한시를 주고받음으로써 주인공이 얼마나 탁월한 인물임을 입증하는 역할을 한 다. 이는 발해인들이 일본에 뛰어난 한시를 남기고 간 역사적 사실을 배경으로 한 것인데, 발해인들의 방문이 그들을 직접 맞이한 문인들 뿐만이 아니라 후세에까지 얼마나 큰 지적 자극제였는지를 가늠할 수 있는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
