본고의 목적은 호남 지역 <논매는소리>와 <모심는소리>에 나타난 애정을 중심으로 호남 민요의 배경 과 특징을 살펴보는 것이다. 호남 민요의 배경은 호남인들의 생활방식인 문화에 있다. 호남 문화의 특징은 개방성과 풍류성이다. 호남 지역은 물산이 풍부하여 넉넉한 삶을 살 수 있고 지리적으로 사방이 트여 남에게 여유로운 개방 성을 지니고, 삶에서도 여유기 있는 풍류성도 지닌다. 풍류는 한을 한때나마 잊고자 하는 생각에서 표 출된 것으로 한이 내재된 풍류이다. 호남 지역 <논매는소리>와 <모심는소리>의 특징은 여성의 주체적 태도가 드러난 점과 불특정화자가 드러난 점이다. 여성의 주체적인 태도가 드러난 노랫말은 주로 비윤리적이고 비일상적인 성격을 띤다. 비윤리적이고 비일상적인 것은 웃음을 유발하는 경향이 있어 여성의 주체적인 태도가 있는 노랫말은 놀이성을 지닌다. 여성의 주체적인 태도가 드러난 노랫말이 가능한 것은 호남의 문화에 개방성이 있기 때문이다. 불특정화자가 드러난 노랫말에는 슬픔을 표출하는 표출성과 즐거움을 지향하는 놀이성이 복합되어 있다. 불특정화자가 드러난 노랫말이 가능한 것은 호남 문화에 풍류성이 있기 때문이다.
