Several villages in Dongmyeon and Seoseokmyeon in Hongchoengun still hold religious rituals. However, how it looks is different from the past. To identify the differences between the present religious rituals and past religious ritual, the religious rituals in held in these places were compared with focus on Jeil, Jemul and Chukmun. Various elements are required for holding village’s religious rituals, such as jeil, Jemul, Chukgwan who read Chukmun and Sojigwan who prays for the health and good luck of villagers while burning Chukmun. Some villages follow the past method; yet most of villages do not follow the past methods. Methods of ritual, of course, varies depending on village and times even in the same villages. In the past, religious rituals were held at dawn on Lunar New Year’s Day for villages to avoid bad luck. However villages choose the date of ritual depending on the situation of village. For villages, fixing the date of ritual is not easy undertaking in a complex society. Thus Jeil varies depending on the situation of village every year and the time of rituals also varies depending on Jeil. In a word, rituals are managed with flexibility. A generous amount of Jemul is available nowadays. However, in fact, the process of ritual has been simplified owing to the difficulty in selecting Doga who is responsible for Jemul. Jemul that must be cooked are excluded since there is no Doga. As a result, fruits, which can be prepared easily, are used in many villages. In the past, Jegwan was selected on the basis of vitality, good luck and virtue. However no one willingly acts as Jegwan these days, Thus Ijang (the head of village) assumes the role of Jegwan in most cases. Doga prepares Jemul for village rituals. However, the roles of Jegwan and Doga are not well-distinguishable. Chukgwan prays watching Chukmun. But this process is often omitted in some cases. This may be because there is no one who can perform this ceremony properly or this process is cumbersome. The role of Sojigwan is critical to village rituals. Villagers pay Jebi to burn a sheet of Soji. Only a few can pray for villagers while performing Soji ceremony in an appropriate manner. It is because Sojigwan needs to be voluble and understand the personal situation of villagers very well. There used to be Sojigwan in every village in the past; yet one village did not perform Soji ceremony in 2014. Participants made a deep bow, instead.

강원도 홍천군의 동면과 서석면의 몇몇 마을에서는 마을제의를 치르고 있으나, 지금의 제의 모습은 예 전과 차이가 있다. 이를 쉽게 알 수 있는 방법은 예전과 지금의 것을 비교하는 것이다. 이에 본 글에서 는 마을제의에서 중요한 요소로 판단되는 제일(祭日), 제물(祭物), 축문(祝文)을 중심으로 비교하여 살 폈다. 마을제의를 치르려면 제일(祭日)을 정하고, 제물(祭物)을 준비하고, 그리고 축문(祝文)을 읽는 축관(祝 官)은 물론 소지(燒紙)를 올리면서 마을 구성원들의 건강과 행운 등을 축원하는 소지관(燒紙官) 등 여 러 요소들이 필요로 한다. 이러한 요소들을 예전 방식 그대로 따르는 마을도 있겠지만, 대부분의 마을 제의는 예전과 같지 않다. 예전에는 대부분의 마을에서 부정한 것을 피하기 위해 새해가 시작되는 초하룻날 새벽에 제의를 시행 했다. 그러던 것이 마을의 여러 사정으로 인하여 택일(擇日)을 하게 되었던 것으로 이해된다. 더욱이 복잡한 현대사회에서 제일을 고정하여 지내기란 쉽지 않다. 따라서 제일은 지역의 사정에 따라 해마다 바뀔 수 있기에 유동적이며, 시간 또한 제일에 맞춰 탄력적으로 운영되고 있다. 현대는 예전에 비해 풍요로운 시대이므로 제물이 넉넉하다. 그러나 실제로는 제물을 담당하는 도가(都 家) 선정의 어려움으로 오히려 제물이 예전보다 간소화되었다. 곧 도가 선정이 어려워 조리해야 하는 제물보다 조리하지 않아도 되는 과실 등이 제물의 중심을 이루는 마을이 많다. 예전에는 제관(祭官)을 뽑을 때 생기와 복덕을 보았으나 지금은 서로들 하지 않으려는 까닭에 마을 이 장이 맡는 경우가 많다. 도가는 제의에서 제물을 준비하는 것이 임무인데, 어떤 마을에서는 제관과 도 가(都家)의 역할이 뚜렷하게 구분되지 않은 경우가 있다. 축관은 고축하는 분으로 축문을 보면서 고하 는데, 마을에 따라서는 생략하는 경우가 있었다. 마을제의에서 소지관의 역할은 매우 중요하다. 마을구성원이 제비(祭費)를 내고 제의에 참석하는 까닭 은 마을의 한 일원으로서 역할에 충실하고, 그에 따른 마을 및 개인의 정성을 다하기 위해서이다. 하지 만 마을구성원의 이러한 바람을 소지에 담아 올려주는 분은 흔치 않다. 소지관은 입담이 좋고 마을 구 성원 개개인의 사정을 일일이 알아야 제대로 고할 수 있기 때문이다. 예전에는 마을제의마다 소지관이 있어서 그 역할을 하였으나, 2014년에는 한 마을에서 소지를 올리지 못하고 대신에 참석자들이 차례로 절을 올렸다.
