The purpose of this paper is to suggest the direction, where the Korean churches have to go forward, by studying the responsibility of church social service practice in the point of multilateral views. Biblical background, theological understanding and historical cases were surveyed, and church social service practice cases were examined. The Bible study showed that God’s love in the Old Testament era had been revealed to the social weak people such as ‘orphans’, ‘widows’ and ‘travelers’ who were poor and didn’t have shelters. In the New testament era, Jesus succeeded God’s love which was revealed through all the New Testament. The theological understanding of church social service was examined in terms of Reformers, Neo-Orthodox Theologians and Reformed Theologians. In addition, the historical cases of church social service were studied in order as follows: the Early Church, the Medieval Church, the Reformation Period, the Modern Church, the Contemporary Church, and the Korean Churches. Based on the documents studies, alternatives for professional practice of Korean church social service in future was suggested.

본 연구는 교회사회봉사실천의 당위성을 다각적인 측면에서 고찰해 봄으로써 한국교회가 나아가야 할 방향성을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 목적을 달 성하기 위해 교회사회봉사의 성경적 근거와 신학적 이해 및 역사적 사례를 탐 색하였다. 성경 연구를 통해 하나님의 사랑은 구약시대부터 ‘고아’와 ‘과부’와 ‘나그네’ 로 대표되는 가난하고 의지할 곳 없이 살아가는 사회적 약자들에게 모든 시대 에 걸쳐 면면히 흐르고 있으며, 신약시대에는 예수 그리스도로 계승되어 복음 서를 비롯한 신약성경 전체에 걸쳐 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 신학적 이해 는 종교개혁자, 신정통주의 신학자, 개혁주의 신학자로 구분하여 고찰하였고, 역사적 사례는 초대교회, 중세교회, 종교개혁시대, 근대교회, 현대교회, 그리고 한국교회의 사회봉사 순으로 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 탐색을 통해 오늘날 한국 교회에 시사해 주는 함의를 도출하고자 하였다.
