As increased awareness of the problem in alcoholism, there has been attempted various efforts to identify the cause of alcoholism for its treatment and rehabilitation. One of results on the attempt is typology of alcoholic personality. It meant that alcoholics have symptoms in very negative, passive, aggressive and antisocial tendencies as well as weak ego, neurotic and depressive characters. Based on these studies, personality type approach has been applied in treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics. The researcher, however, raised a doubt about whether the type of personality as the result of personality theory and previous research is caused to be alcoholic or the type of personality is formed as the result of alcoholic. Since such type of personality may be seen in non-alcoholics. To support this research question, a comparative study was performed between before alcoholics as adolescence and after alcoholics based on 5 types of personality (BIF). It is found that personality was changed between before and after alcoholic upon this study. That is to say that there was not appeared the typical alcoholic personality before becoming alcoholic, and there was type of alcoholic personality after become alcoholic in similar to the personality theory and previous study.

알코올중독에 대한 문제 인식이 높아지면서 알코올중독의 치료와 회복을 위한 원인규명을 위해 다양한 노력이 시도되어왔다. 그 결과물 가운데 하나가 알코 올중독자의 성격을 유형화한 것이다. 알코올중독자는 매우 부정적이고, 수동 공격적이며, 반사회적인 경향이 강하고, 신경증적이며, 약한 자아와 우울증상 이 강한 특징을 가진다는 것이다. 이러한 연구를 바탕으로 알코올중독자 치료 와 회복에서 성격별 접근을 시도하고 있다. 본 연구자는 성격이론과 선행연구의 결과물인 성격유형화가 알코올중독자 가 되는 원인인지, 아니면 알코올중독자가 된 이후 나타나는 결과로써 형성된 것인지 의문을 제기했다. 왜냐하면 그러한 유형적 성격은 일반인들에게도 나타 날 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 의문을 뒷받침하기 위해 알코올중독자가 되기 이 전 청소년기와 중독자가 된 이후 성격의 변화에 대한 비교연구를 성격의 5가지 유형(BIF)에 근거하여 수행했다. 분석결과 알코올중독자의 청소년기와 중독이 된 이후 성격은 달라진 것으로 나타났다. 알코올중독자가 되기 전에는 알코올중독자의 성격유형이 대체로 형 성되지 않았으며, 알코올중독자가 된 이후에는 성격유형 관련 선행연구와 유사 하게 알코올중독자의 성격유형이 나타났다.
