This study explores the significance of ‘sense’ and ‘place’, as poetic subjectsin Jeong Jiyong's early poetry. ‘Place’ in Jeong Jiyong's early poetry wasselected with a specific experience and intention of the poetic subjects; andfunctions as an important element that embodies the net of significance of thepoem. It can also be expressed in an image perceived by a sensible experience;whichever the case is, a place in a poem seems to be interfered by awarenessof the subject. A place in this case is integrated into a structure of intentionsformed by all human perceptions and experiences. A place becomes specific andrealistic when the experience of a place is realized by overall senses by thesubject; this means concrete significance can be obtained by experience andsenses of the subject in the place. Therefore significance of a place in a poemcan be identified in the context of correlations between the subject and theplace. This study extends the net of significance of a place to the relationshipbetween the perceived object and the place focusing on a place of a poeticsubject in Jeong Jiyong's early poetry and explores significance of sensibleperception and poetic mentality on an object perceived in a place. A place inJeong Jiyong's early poetry enables sensible realization on an object perceived. It is a sensible expression on how a place reveals the significance to a poeticsubject in a space where sensible perception is possible; and on how toreproduce an object in a certain place. A sense in Jeong Jiyong's early poetryis embodied with various senses-touch or hearing-focusing on vision. Alsosenses show different aspects depending on where the poetic subject perceivesan object. A place in Jeong Jiyong's early poetry has significance in revealing thesubject's awareness and orientation which are combined with sensible actionsand experience of the poetic subject. Also a place in Jeong Jiyong's early poetrycan be viewed as an aspect of poetic response for corresponding the changingworld, rather than an object perceived by transcendental intuition. Exploringthe significance of ‘place’ established as a space of poetic symbol in JeongJiyong's early poetry is meaningful in identifying modern awareness system ofpoets who attempted reproduction and re-structuralization of the modern worldin their own right.

시에서 ‘장소’는 시적 주체의 특정한 경험과 의도에 의해 분별적으로 선택된 것으로, 시의의미망을 구성하는 주요한 요소로 작용한다. 또한 시에서 ‘장소’는 시적 주체의 경험이나 기억,상상을 통해 주체의 인식과 지향을 드러내는데, ‘장소’를 시적 주체에 의해 총체적으로 지각된대상으로 간주하게 되면 그 자체로 구체적인 현실 성을 확보한다. 이는 ‘장소’가 그것에 대한주체의 경험과 감각에 의해 구체적인 의미를 획득한다는 것을 의미 한다. 그러므로 시에서 ‘장소’는 ‘주체’와 ‘장소’의 상호관계성 속에서 파악해야 한다. 이러한 관점에 의해 본고 는 정지용의 초기시를 대상으로 하여 시적 주체의 ‘감각’과 ‘장소’의 의미를 결부시켜 살펴보았다. 정지용의 초기시에서 ‘장소’를 중심으로 한 시적 주체의 대상에 대한 감각적 지각의 양상은시적 주체가 위치 한 장소의 특성에 따라 시각, 촉각, 청각 등 다양한 감각이 동원되면서 종합적인 감각 작용의 양상을 보인다. 정지용의 초기시에서 ‘장소’는 시적 주체의 ‘감각’에 의해 재창조된 세계를 지각할 수 있는 가능성이 내재된 것 으로 보인다. 정지용의 초기시에서 시적 주체에게 지각된 대상의 이미지는 특정 장소에서 대상을 바라보는 주 체의 시선과 감각 작용에의해 종합적으로 재현되기 때문이다. 이에 따라 본고는 정지용의 초기시에서 시적 자 아가 위치한 ‘장소’를 중심으로 하여 지각된 대상과 장소와의 관계로 장소의 의미망을 확장시키고 그로써 장 소에서 지각된 대상에 대한 감각적 지각 작용과 시적 정서의 의미를 살펴보았다. 정지용의 초기시에서 ‘장소’는 시적 주체의 감각적 지각 작용이나 경험과 결부되어 주체의인식과 지향을 드러 낸다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 또한 정지용의 초기시에서 ‘장소’는 선험적인직관에 의해 지각된 대상이 아니라 변화하는 세계와 통합적으로 조응하기 위한 시적 대응의한 양상으로 파악할 수 있다. 정지용의 초기시를 대상 으로 하여 시적 표상의 공간으로 구축된‘장소’의 의미를 고찰하는 것은 근대화된 세계를 나름대로 재현하고 재구조화하려 했던 시인의 근대적 인식 체계를 파악하는 데에도 유용한 방식이 된다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.
