This paper studied the features of sea and modernity senses of Jeong JiYoung and analyzes the modern poetry world of Jeong Ji Young. It is timespointed out that sea and modernity in the nature of Jeong Ji Young wasfeatures of modern korean poetry. His sea and modernity's nature of Jeong Ji Young has been involvedenlightenment and desire's features the first stage modern korean poetry. Thatis sea, Catholicism, desire and eternal in first period. The poetical investigation of Jeong Ji Young, as we pointed out in his text,embodies a start of modern korean poetry, especially in the between sea andmodernity senses. That is to say, his sea and modernity senses, have theopportunity to understand in his first poetry. The sea and modernity, unitedworld and recover is the important concept the first stage modern koreanpoetry. This work is the first stage departing from sea and modernity. 한국 시사에서 근대는 바다와 불가분의 관계에 놓여 있었다. 근대 이후 형성된 대륙지향적인 중화주의는 소위 아시아적 정체성에 따라 그 실효성을 잃어버리게 된다. 그에 맞물려서 등장한 것이 근대화된 일본의 존재이다 . 근대가 받아들여야할 필연으로 존재하는 이상, 그것의호불호를 떠나서 어떻게든 계몽의 이름으로 수용되어 야 했다. 그러한 당위성이 시인들의 시선을 대륙으로부터 끌어내리고 바다로 시선을 돌리게끔 했다. 개화기 이후 바다를 소재로 많은 작품을 쓴 것은 정지용이 처음이다. 다만 문제되는 것은정지용과 계몽의식과 의 상관관계에 있을 터인데, 실상 정지용의 작품에서 계몽적 요소를 읽어내는 것은 매우 난망한 일이었다. 바 다를 소재로 많은 시를 썼음에도 불구하고 그의 작품에서계몽적인 요소가 거의 드러나지 않기 때문이다. 그것 은 첫째, 바다를 소재로 쓴 시들이 일본유학 시절에 쓰여졌다는 점, 그리하여 전진하는 사유보다는 그 반대의 사유에 초점이 맞추어져 있었다는 것이다. 정지용은 육당의 작품에서 볼 수 있는 바다에서 근대의 건강성과 역동성을 발견했다. 그것은 곧 미래지향적인 원근법의 세계였다. 이런 전진적인 사유들은 계몽의 필연적인 요소일 수밖에 없으며, 정지용의 ｢바다｣계통의 작품들이 갖는 특색이기도 했다. 바다에 대한 개방성의시각이 곧 그의 근대였으며, 시대를 이끄는 힘으로 기 능했다. 비록 그것이 지속적인 힘과 시간을 갖지 못했으나 그의 근대성을 이해하는 주된 계기는 바다라는 매 개였다.
