In by Choi In-hun, the 1976 edition rewritten for the completecollection showed a difference from prior works in that the two seagullsfollowing Lee Myung-jun the whole time on the ship to the neutral turned intoEun-hye and her daughter that revived from the cave, instead of Yoon-ae andEun-hye which he loved each in South and North Korea. Therefore, the themeof the work turned from the tragic death of an elite to a ritualistic salvationof a mythical protagonist. In turn, at the end of the work Lee, guided by the two seagulls, happily divein to the sea; the blue square, in order to return to paradise through the processof death and revival. However, this fate of his was already shown in his collegeyears by his spirits possession. This shamanistic possession was repeatedlyreferred to in the work in order to let us know that he is theosophical being. There are mainly two reasons why focused mainly ontheological strains. One is that Choi, after writing up until in 1973, started to focus on returning to paradise throughreclamation and universal desires. Another is that he, after spending threeyears in the United States, was shocked at American cultures. Through this,the writer was trying to enhance the universality and the perpetuity of thework.

<광장>에서 이명준은 신내림을 통해 자신의 앞날을 미리 바라볼 수 있는 접신적 존재로푸른 광장인 바다에 뛰어들어 낙원으로 돌아가고 있다. 그는 남북한 및 타골호의 세 공간이나타내는 정치체제와 그것의 이데올로 기를 탐색하고 있다. 하지만 그러한 탐색은 실패할 수밖에 없다. 그가 낙원으로 회귀하고자 바다에 뛰어드는 일은 신내림 속에서 그에게 예정된 일이었기 때문이다. 그런데 이러한 이명준의 낙원회귀에는 죽음에서 재생한 두 갈매기가 결정적인 역할을 한다. 이전에는 두 마리 의 갈매기가 윤애와 은혜의 분신이었는데 전집판 <광장>에서는 은혜와딸로 바뀌고 있다. 이때에 지모신과 같 은 존재인 은혜가 딸과 함께 이명준을 낙원을 상징하는재생의 공간인 바다로 인도하여 신비적 구원을 추구하 고 있다. 그리고 <광장>의 개작을 통해 최인훈이 낙원회귀 지향을 강화하고 있는 이유를 크게 세가지로 파악할 수 있 다. 첫째는 국내의 역사적 상황의 변화 속에서 최인훈이 점차 역사보다신화를 신뢰하게 된 것이고, 둘째는 국 외 생활을 통해 경험한 미국문화의 충격 속에서 ‘미국의아담’이란 낙원회귀 신화의 영향을 받은 때문이다. 셋 째는 최인훈이 북한에 고향을 둔 ‘전후신세대 월남작가’로 현실적으로 불가능한 고향회귀의 갈망을 해소하고 자 신화적 맥락의 낙원회귀를 선택하고 있다는 점이다.
