Nowadays, there is a growing interest in the Portuguese language in China, and in turn, a growing trend for learning Mandarin in Portugal. As an emerging economy, the world has its eyes focused on China. Due to the growing cooperation between China, Angola and Brazil, the Portuguese language has become increasingly popular in China. For the Chinese, since Portugal is the country of origin of the Portuguese language and enjoys a significant political and social stability, is the first location chosen to learn Portuguese. For this reason, and over time, many partnerships between Portuguese and Chinese universities and institutions have been made, facilitating the exchange of students, exchange of resources and knowledge, and the creation of language courses. This essay presents the context in which the relations and partnerships between Chinese and Portuguese universities have been established. The topics to be addressed are: international relations between China and Portuguese‐speaking countries, the importance of international and cultural exchange in a globalized world, as well as the value of the cooperation between universities. Next, this essay also aims to present examples of cooperation programs that have been established, and plans for further collaboration between Portugal and China. This theme is closely related to my personal experience. Having already had the opportunity to join international programs to study Mandarin in Chinese universities, this theme displays a reality that is familiar to me and I consider most relevant in the present times.
