How is Wonhyo's thought of harmonization unfolded inside of Wonhyo’s thought of pure land. This is the purpose of this paper. After knowing that the thought of pure land is very necessary to the simple people of Sila dynasty, he let them know the thought of pure land through writing the books. In these books, we can feel the spirit of his unique harmonization. First of all, the chapter of pure land has 2 parts: the shape of pure land and the co- ownership in pure land. In the shape of pure land, his saying about the two kinds of gateway let us know that he interprets the scripture based on the intention of the author. And in the co-ownership of pure land, his words, "All theories are right and wrong simultaneously," make us to infer that he awake the importance of real meaning. Secondly, the chapter of cultivation has 2 parts: the cause of establishment and the cause of birth. In the cause of establishment, when he said that all theories are right because they depend on the scripture, he expressed the idea that all scriptures are right. And in the cause of birth, when he decided that they needed not to argue on the matter, he exposed his great amount of study on the scripture. Lastly, the chapter of people has also 2 parts: Amitabha and sentient beings. In the Amitabha, he awakes the ordinary people from ignorance and misunderstanding through presenting the true meaning of the passages of the scriptures. And in the sentient beings, he gives us the exact meaning of the passage of the scriptures despite the lack of common structure of harmonious discussion.

본고는 원효의 화쟁론이 그의 정토사상 분야에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는가에 대해서 탐색하고 있다. 원효는 정토사상이 어리석고 소박한 신라의 민중들에게 매우 긴요하다는 것을 간파하여『무량수경종요』를 비롯한 여러 저서를 지어 정토사상의 참뜻을 널리 알렸다. 우리는 이러한 저 서에서 제설을 진리에 입각하여 조화롭게 이해하고자 하는 그의 특징적인 화쟁의 정신을 느낄 수 있다. 첫째, ‘정토’ 분야에는 정토의 형상과 공유에 대해서 서술하고 있다. 이 중에서 ‘정토의 형상’에 관한 논의에서는 2개의 관점[門]을 제시한 뒤에 이것을 바탕으로 양설을 회통하고 있는데, 그는 경론의 저자가 가진 의도ㆍ견해ㆍ입장까지를 고려한 해석을 하여 우리를 일깨워주고 있다. 또한 , ‘정토의 공유’에 관한 논의에서는 양설이 모두 옳기도 하고 동시에 그르기도 하다고 말하였는 데, 이것을 통해서 그는 언어가 가리키려고 하는 참뜻을 새긴다면 양설이 맞고 틀리는 것은 다만 그 표현에 불과하다는 점을 일깨워주고 있다. 둘째, ‘수행’ 분야에는 정토의 생성원인과 왕생원인에 대해서 서술하고 있다. 이 중에서 ‘생성의 원인’에 관한 논의에서는 ‘모두 성전에 근거를 두고 있기 때문에 모두 옳다’고 말하였는데, 이것 으로 보아서 그는 경전의 내용들은 모두 옳다고 굳게 믿는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한, ‘왕생의 원인’ 에 관한 논의에서는 양설이 실제로 서로 다른 것을 주장하기 때문에 논쟁할 필요가 없다고 판단 을 내렸는데, 이러한 판단을 내리는 과정에서 그가 폭넓은 경전에 관한 공부를 바탕으로 논쟁의 당사자를 진심으로 승복시키는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 셋째, ‘사람’ 분야에는 아미타불과 정정취중생에 대해서 서술하고 있다. 이 중에서 ‘아미타불’에 관한 논의에서는 문구에 얽매이지 않고 여러 경론의 틀 속에서 경론의 진정한 의미를 파악함으 로써, 독자들의 무지와 오해를 일깨우는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 또한 ‘정정취중생’에 관한 논의에서 는 비록 일반적인 회통논의에 해당하는 구조를 가지지는 못하였지만, 그가 쌓은 경전에 관한 폭 넓은 지식으로 우리에게 그 내용을 정확하게 설명해주고 있다.
