It is a research on the Most Venerable Goam Sangeon (1899∼1988) as a paragon of Mahayana Buddhist leader who had shown his life and thoughts to respond the contemporary situations in the society where people need Buddhism and spirituality in terms of wisdom and compassion for solving their problems. Generally, in Korea, Goam was known and called as “Jabibosal”in Korean which means a ‘Bodhisattva of Compassion’ even though he was actually Seon (Chan/ Zen) Master and Vinaya Master. In this paper we would review the life and achievements of Goam who had shown that he subjectively learned and integrated the traditional ways of practices in Buddhist meditation, doctrines and precepts equally through the middle-path and non-duality to overcome the self-centered manner of contemporaries for attaining harmonious enlightenment and the perfect personality, as an ideal practitioner. We could appreciate that he realized his serving mission to the people of community and society through living the life of traditional Seon Master as well as the life of Mahayana Bodhisattva by sharing wisdom and compassion based on the attainment of his practices and experiences. To point out his historical significance from his achievements, it can be said that Goam's life and thoughts contributed the world as follows: First, in Korean context, he could be a representative venerable Buddhist master of Korea in the 20thcentury in terms of spirituality and achievement considering experts in the Gyo and Yul as well as the Seon, for being in dignity and integrity of the patriarchal master of Seon tradition. Second, in the global aspect, he lived and dedicated his life to save the people of the world as the enlightened Seon master, who returned to the society of world after attainment of his own purpose to care people by his wisdom and compassion as well as the Mahayana Bodhisattva who reincarnated in the world and manifests compassion for people by his own intention and wisdom in the age of globalization. Therefore, he could be counted as a forerunner of Buddhist globalization considering his international activities throughout the east and the west. Goam seems to be a paragon in terms of religious leader for the contemporary monastic and other practitioners for spiritual lives and sharing one’s wisdom and compassion. In short, we can say that he is one of the most important Buddhist masters in Korea and the world last century and people get inspiration from him and have aspiration for making peaceful and better world for all sentient beings.

고암 대종사는 19세기 말에 한국에 태어나 20세기 후반기까지 격동의 국내외 상황 속에서, 수행 과 교화에 전념하였으며, 불교 교단의 최고위 정상에 올랐다가 내려와, 이른바 "세계화"의 다양 한 국제적 분위기 가운데 선구적 위치에서 포교하다가 산화한 그 시대 한국불교계의 대표적 인 물이다. 불교가 정치적으로 핍박 받았던 조선시대가 마감되며 제국주의 열강들이 패권을 겨루던 대한제국시대에 태어나, 일제 강점기에 해인사로 출가한 뒤로, 민족독립 만세운동에도 참여하였 으며, 삼학균수의 수행자로서 젊은 시절을 지내고, 불교가 자유롭게 활동할 수 있는 대한민국시 대에는 불교전통을 회복하고자 불교정화운동과 새로운 종단 구축 및 교화사업에 인생의 장년을 바쳤으며, 종단의 영도와 국제포교에 노년을 보내다 서거한 고암 대종사는, 20세기 정치사회적 변화와 함께 한국불교계 변화의 중심에 서서, 수행자와 지도자로서의 모범적인 족적을 보여주고 있다. 고암대종사는 20세기 세계불교사에서, 지역적으로는 한국불교의 발전에 공헌했을 뿐만 아 니라, 서양의 대표적 강대국인 미국에 포교를 하다가 순직한 한국 내지 동양의 대표적 불교지도 자의 한사람으로서, 동서양을 아우르는 이른바, 불교세계화의 선구자로 평가되고 기억되어야 할 인물이다. 이는 불교 교조인 석가모니 부처님 교법과 아울러, 동아시아 선종 조사인 보리달마의 선불교전통을 현대 생활에 실현하고, 후대 선사들의 자기수행과 사회에 회향한 전형적 과정을 도식화하여 상징적으로 표현한 곽암선사의 ‘십우도’의 의미를 지난세기말에 구현한 것으로도 볼 수 있다. 아울러, 고암 대종사가 용성 대종사의 법을 잇고, 그 가풍을 선양하기 위하여 해인사 용탑선원에 주석하며 근본도량으로 삼은 사실에 주목하면, 해인사의 중요성이 새롭게 부각된다. 해인사는 한국의 대표적 수행도량으로서, 유네스코가 지정한 세계문화유산인 대장경을 수장한 법보종찰 이며, 근현대의 대표적 선지식인 용성 대종사가 출가 및 주석하였던 곳이고, 그의 법제자 고암 대종사 역시 이곳에 출가하였으며 만년에는 종정과 방장을 역임하고 입적하였던 곳이다. 이어서 퇴옹 성철, 혜암 성관, 도림 법전 등, 조계종단의 종정을 계승한 용성의 법손과 자운 성우 대율사 및 가산 지관 강사 등, 용성 문도들이 조계종의 총무원장직 등을 역임하며, 으뜸가는 총림으로서 선원과 강원, 율원과 기타 다양한 수행시설의 종합적 구현으로 청백가풍을 선양하고 한국불교 발전에 크게 기여한 사실 등을 감안하면, 해인사는 조계종단과 한국불교의 중심지일 뿐만 아니 라, 세계적 불교문화의 성지로 볼 수 있으므로, 그에 합당한 국제적 위상정립과 역할을 할 필요 가 있다. 앞으로 고암 대종사의 불교세계 건설에 대한 유지를 계승하여 실현하고 확산시키는 일 은 오늘날 21세기를 살아가는 우리 불교인들 모두의 책무이며, 관련 자료들을 새롭게 정리하고 연구하여 국제적 소통에 합당하게 하는 일을 해인사와 종단의 과제로 제기한다.
