In Field Work written just after escaping Northern Troubles and moving into Southern Ireland, Heaney shows how he reacts to the violence of Northern Ireland. This paper attempts to prove the hypotheses that Heaney tries to criticize and expose the violence in Northern Ireland through the genre of pastoral elegy, that he sincerely emphasizes love and peace as a way to cure the wounds through the genre of sonnet, and that the arrangement of poems highlights the effect of his resistance against violence. This perspective shows that some elegies for victims of Northern Troubles expose and criticize the violence while the Glanmore sonnets suggest the ways to cure the wounds. Further, the structure of poems enhances Heaney’s intention to reveal the reckless violence and justify his escape from Northern Troubles. I
