Although the Jogye-jong(曹溪宗) has relatively clear history, Many divergent views are in the raised state in relation to the origin, a founder of the order and legitimate origin. The recognition standard of the Jogye-jong history for an adherent including monks and Buddhist are very low. Even researchers of this field announced the sentence which written by mind of wild speculation and misunderstanding.
Recently, even worse, The insistence, such as a necessary need of changing the Name of the Order(宗名), was also raised by a Jogye-jong key role person. This study is tried to understanding systematically about Jogye-jong history with recognizing such serious problem. Because I judge that view of history, which is raised in the state when fact is ignored or distorted, may exert an bad influence on understanding of history.
This study tried the following periodization in history of the Jogye-jong, and its body is composed of describing major contents by a structure of such periodization.
• The 1st period - Period of Seon School established : Fusion period of Zen and non-Zen Buddhism : 9-10th century
• The 2nd period - Period of the Jogye-jong order established and developed : Period of Nine Zen sect : 11th century - 1424 years (Sejong 6 years)
• The 3rd period - Period of losing Name of the Order and recovering legitimate origin : Period of Seon & Doctrinal School : 1424-1941
• The 4th period - Period of the reconstructing and recovering Jogye-jong order : Period of Jogye-jong order represents Korean Buddhist : Current as of the 1941-Reckoning history of the Jogye-jong that Do’eui(道義) returned to Shilla(821), Jogye-jong keep its history as many as 1200 years. It wasn't possible to express such a long history in this study, but through the contents of body, presents a basic structure for understanding history of the Jogye-jong. From now on, It'll be expected that based on this study, researchers’ effort for systematic understanding of history of Jogye-jong can be further actively.

조계종은 비교적 뚜렷한 역사를 지니고 있음에도 불구하고 그 기원과 종조, 법통 등과 관련하여 숱한 이설들이 제기되어 있는 상태이다. 승, 재가를 포함한 종도들의 조계종사 인식 수준은 매우 낮으며, 관련 연구자들조차 억측과 오해로 점철된 글을 발표하기도 한다. 최근에는 조계종 주요 인사들에 의해 심지어 종명 개정이 필요하다는 식의 주장이 제기되기도 하였다. 필자는 이같은 문제의 심각성을 인식하면서 이 논문을 통해 조계종 宗史의 체계적 이해를 시도하고자 하였다. 역사 사실에 대한 무지, 또는 사실을 곡해한 상태에서 제기되는 사관은 역사 이해에 적지 않은 해악을 끼칠 수도 있다는 판단 때문이었다.
이를 위해 필자는 다음과 같은 조계종사 시대구분을 시도해 보았으며, 본문은 이같은 시대구분의 틀에 따라 그 주요 내용을 서술해나가는 형식으로 구성하였다.
•제 1기-선종 성립기 : 선교융합시대 : 9~10세기
•제 2기-조계종 성립 및 발전기 : 9산선문시대 : 11세기~1424년(세종 6년)
•제 3기-종명 상실 및 법통 복원기 : 선교양종시대 : 1424~1941
•제 4기-종단 재건 및 부흥기 : 한국불교 대표종단시대 : 1941~현재
조계종조 道義가 신라로 귀국한 821년부터 기산한다면 조계종은 무려 1,200여 년이라는 역사를 간직하고 있다. 이 논문에서 이처럼 장구한 역사의 모든 것을 담아낼 수는 없었다. 특히 고려 초기의 선종이 조계종으로 변화되는 과정과 그 의미를 보다 구체적으로 살피지 못하였다는 아쉬움이 남는다. 아울러 14~15세기 조계종사 역시 면밀히 살펴보지 못하였다. 하지만, 본문 내용을 통해 조계종사 이해를 위한 기본 틀은 어느 정도 제시할 수 있었다는 생각이 든다. 향후, 이 논문을 바탕으로 조계종사의 체계적 이해를 위한 학계의 노력이 더욱 활발해질 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
