Ganwhaseon(看話禪) is a method of practice, which aims to realize the nature of human being by keeping Whadu(話頭). In this paper I will discuss the nature of human being as it is conceived in Ganwhaseon and then analyze how the method of keeping Whadu can lead us to realize such nature of huaman being. The discussion hopefully will illuminate the deep structure of human mind. In the surface layer, human mind is working as the object-intending(the object-bound) consciousness, but in the deep layer, human mind is awake without subject-object-duality. This awakening is called ‘Original-Awakening(本覺)’ or ‘Empty-Calm-Spiritual-Knowing(空寂靈知)’. Ganwhaseon takes this deep mind with original awakening, that is ‘One-Mind(一心)’, as the true nature of human being. So the person in the practice of Ganwhaseon must try to separate his own mind from the surface-consciousness and to enter into the deep-mind. The strong-doubt from Whadu will help the mind to go through the barrier to the depth of the mind and ultimately to realize its own nature. To reach the moment of the ‘Sudden-Enlightenment’(頓悟) is the goal of the practice of Ganwhseon.

간화선은 화두참구를 통해 인간의 본성 내지 본래면목을 깨닫고자 하는 수행법이다. 본고에서는 우선 간화선이 증득하고자 하는 인간의 본래면목이 무엇인지를 논하고, 그 다음 간화선의 화두참구가 어떤 방식으로 그 본래면목의 증득에 이르게 하는지를 살펴본다. 인간의 마음은 표층에서는 대상을 연하여 아는 반연심(攀緣心) 내지 견문각지심(見聞覺知心)으로 작동하지만, 심층에서는 대상이 없이도 성성하게 깨어있는 본각(本覺) 내지 공적영지심(空寂靈知心)으로 활동한다. 간화선은 이 공적영지의 일심(一心)을 자신의 본래면목으로 자각하고자 한다. 심층마음인 일심에 이르기 위해 간화선에서는 화두(話頭)를 든다. 화두가 일으키는 의심은 우리를 사유의 한계로 나아가게 하며, 그 한계지점에서 우리는 표층의식 너머 심층마음으로 나아가는 것을 저지하는 장벽(은산철벽)과 부딪치게 된다. 의심이 의정(疑情)이 되고 의단(疑端)으로 뭉치면 그 힘으로 사유의 장벽, 업장의 장벽을 뚫고 심층마음으로 나아가 본심과 계합하게 된다. 이것이 자신의 본래면목을 깨닫는 견성 내지 돈오의 순간이다.
