This paper is to study the history and feature of Korea Buddhist Jogye order. This paper is basically stressing that the Jogye order is the religious body succeeded the 1700-year’s history of Korean Buddhism. The history and feature of the Jogye order should still be examined in various perspectives, but its historical origin is not discussible. Some member of Jogye order, however, have improper understanding in such historical consciousness of succession. This misunderstanding comes from absence of education of Jogye order history and arbitrary perception of history. The most typical misunderstanding is the proposition thatthe Jogye order was established in 1962. This is evident misunderstanding and distortion of historical context. This is an improper conclusion from stressing way too much integral religious body. Establishment of integral religious body and 50 years of history thereafter can be considered positive, but arbitrary interpretation of history causes many problems. If the Jogye order succeeded the 1700 years’history of Korean Buddhism, and modern and present Buddhist history, its historical context and succession must be clearly studied and organized. In pursuit of such study, the author is to prove reconstruction of Korean Jogye order as unifiedand integral religious body in 1962 through Buddhist cleanup movement, which was the explosion of conflict and contradiction among many monks from different religious orders under Japanese imperialism and right after liberation. To put it concretely, this paper is to examinethe contents and feature of firstly Chosun Buddhist Jogye Order established in 1941, secondly Jogye Order established in 1954 ~ 1955, and thirdly Korean Buddhist Jogye Order reconstructed in 1962. By studying those three aspects, the succession of Chosun Buddhist Jogye Order – Jogye order – Korean Buddhist Jogye order is attempted to be verified. With such historically contextual study, it can be verified that Korean Buddhist Jogye Order is not newly established, but reconstructed.

본 고찰은 대한불교조계종의 역사와 성격을 살피려는 고찰이다. 이 고찰은 기본적으로 조계종이 1700 여년의 한국 불교사를 계승한 종단임을 강조한다. 조계종의 역사, 성격은 다양한 관점에서 정리되어야 하지만 역사적 맥락을 부인할 수는 없다. 그런데 조계종단 일부 구성원의 종단관에는 이 같은 역사의 계승의식에 대한 부적절한 이해가 노정되 고 있다. 이는 종단사 교육의 부재, 자의적인 역사인식에서 기인한다. 그 부적절한 이해의 대표적인 것 은 조계종이 1962년에 창종된 것으로 보는 것이다. 이는 역사적 맥락의 오해이자 왜곡이다. 즉 통합종 단을 지나치게 최우선적인 가치로 보려는 것이다. 통합종단 출범과 그 이후 50년 역사를 긍정적으로 볼 수는 있지만, 자의적인 역사해석은 많은 문제를 초래한다. 조계종이 1700년의 불교사, 근현대기의 불교사를 계승하였다면, 그에 대한 역사적 맥락 및 계승을 정 리해야 한다. 이에 필자는 일제하 불교, 해방공간의 불교 공간 승려들의 갈등과 모순이 폭발한 불교정 화운동을 거쳐 1962년에 통합종단, 통일종단으로서 대한불교 조계종이 재건되었음을 입증하려고 한다 . 구체적으로는 첫째, 1941년에 출범한 조선불교 조계종 둘째, 1954~1955년에 출범한 불교 조계종, 셋 째 1962년에 재건된 대한불교조계종 등의 성립 및 내용을 정리하고자 한다. 그리하여 조선불교조계종 - 조계종 - 대한불교조계종이 계승되었음을 확인하고자 하였다. 이로써 대한불교조계종이 새롭게 창 종된 것이 아님을 역사적으로 확인할 수 있었다.
