This paper diagnoses the contemporary social problems in Korea with the loss of moral sense. And I examine the implications of the life and idea of Ven Song Gyeongheo (1846-1912) with this matter. The contemporary social problems in Korea were sown in the early modern period. And it was raised in the era of rapidly growing industries. As modern age Korean society passes through three steps, the moral sense was disappeared. First phases were imperialism age of survival of the fittest that swept the early 20th century world. Second phases were anti-communist ideology golden age of economic growth putting first which progress since take in the 1990s since the independence day. Third phases were global stream that is neoliberalism pouring from the mid-1990s. Korean people were required to internalize power intention, and differentiate natural personality and social personality passing through this process. In these situation, Gyeongheo's life and thought pitch some implications. He showed critical mind about power intention by resigning himself. Also, he showed countenance to establish social ethics with historical consciousness that is rare in religion. And he showed that a moral sense is secured by the maintaining a sense of spontaneity.

이 논문은 현대 한국사회가 당면한 문제를 사회윤리의식의 실종이라는 관점에서 진단하고, 경허(鏡虛, 1846∼1912)의 사상이 이러한 문제점에 어떤 시사점을 던져주는지 밝히고자 하는 취지에서 비롯되었 다. 현대 한국사회가 당면한 문제는 가깝게는 근대 시기에 파종되고 산업화 시대에 양육되어 나타난 결과물이다. 근대 한국 사회는 세 단계를 거치면서 도덕감이 실종되었다. 첫 번째 단계는 20세기 초 전 세계를 휩쓸 었던 우승열패의 패권주의적 제국주의 시대였다. 두 번째 단계는 광복 이후부터 1990년대에 접어들 무 렵까지 진행된 경제성장 위주의 국가정책과 반공 이데올로기 전성시대였다. 세 번째 단계는 1990년대 중반부터 밀어닥친 신자유주의라는 세계사적 흐름이었다. 이 세 단계의 과정을 거치면서 한국 사회는 권력지향을 내면화 하고, 자연적 인격과 사회적 인격을 분화하도록 요구받았고, 이는 전 사회적인 도 덕감의 상실로 귀결되었다. 이러한 상황에서 경허의 생애와 사상은 시사점을 던져준다. 그는 스스로 자리비워주기 통해 권력지향 에 대한 문제의식을 드러냈다. 또 일반적인 종교인으로서는 보기 드물게 역사의식을 바탕으로 사회윤 리의식을 확립하려는 면모도 보여주었다. 또한 철저히 주체적이고 자유로운 의식 속에서 윤리성도 담 보된다는 사실을 보여주고 있다.
