This study set out to investigate the life, ideology, and poetic characteristics of Hwanseong Jian and the significance of his poetry in the history of zen poetry with his anthologies in the latter half of Joseon. An important figure in the history of Buddhism, he provided materials for zen controversy in the latter half of Joseon by publishing Seonmunojongmangyo. Having good knowledge of Hwaeomgyo study, he also expressed the world of zen realization with the “Sangjeuk” ideology of Hwaeom. As for his poetic characteristics, he maintained the legitimacy of typical zen poetry by avoiding the narration structure of post-zen vocabulary and Seoli, which was one of the flows of the times, selecting topics as direct poetic words, and adopting zen vocabulary of paradox, transcendence, and illogic. He also expressed the two states of "transcendence" and "mediocrity" at the same time by using law and teaching and described the zen and poetic taste of ascetics who had forgotten about the secular world with the Shijungyuhwa technique. He pursued a poetic perspective of pure poetic literature, which was to write a poem with pleasure and clear the temperament, in addition to the instrumental utility theory. It was one of the zen poetry trends in the 17th century. He also enriched zen poetry and the significance of its history by inheriting the zen poetry of the previous periods and creating a flow of pursuing pure literature in zen poetry further in the 18th century.

본 논문은 조선후기 喚醒志安의 詩集을 대상으로 그의 생애와 사상, 詩的 특징과 禪詩史의 의의를 규명하였다. 환성은 불교사에서 중요한 인물로 그가 編錄한 『禪門五宗綱要』는 조선후기 禪 논쟁의 자료를 제공하였다. 또 화엄교학에도 밝았던 그는 선적 깨달음의 세계를 화엄의 ‘相卽’의 사상으로 표출하였다. 詩的 특징은 당시 한 흐름이었던 脫禪語, 說理傾向의 敍述構造를 止揚하고 話頭를 직접 詩語로 채택하거나 逆說, 超越, 非論理의 禪語를 사용하여 전형적 禪詩의 정통을 堅持하였다. 또한 法과 諭를 사용하여 ‘超越’과 ‘平凡’이라는 두 경지를 동시에 표현하였다. 한편으로는 忘機한 수행자의 禪趣와 詩趣를 詩中有畵의 작법으로써 그려내기도 하였다. 환성은 道具的 效用論과 더불어 흥이 나면 시를 짓고 性情을 맑히는 순수 시문학적 詩觀을 추구하였는데 이러한 경향은 17세기 선시의 한 潮流이었음도 파악하였다. 또한 이전 시기 선시의 계승과 더불어 18세기 선시에 있어 더욱 더 순수문학을 지향하게 하는 흐름을 조성하여 禪詩史를 풍부하게 한 禪詩史的 意義를 부여하였다.
