초록

영어

The positive psychologists that intended to study the effect of positive emotions for psychotherapy at its start-line, has moved to study scientifically personal virtues and character. They claim that assessing and facilitating personal character strengths and virtues by their VIA and meditations can make her or him who owns those attain to personal well-being or flourishing. Traditionally character or virtues are theme of ethicists' study. This article aims to exam the positive psychologists', especially M. Seligman's who founded the positive psychology, scientific approach and contents of character and virtues study, and then to criticize those from the points of views that Aristotle or/and A. MacIntyre hold. This article's arguments are as followings. Firstly, the positive psychologist's vindication for it's value neutrality is vulnerable by his using implicit value terms and judgements, and personal emotions and preferences rather than cognition(or objective judgement) about 'value or good' play a important role in bridging the gaps among character signatures, virtues, happiness, resulting in reduction moral virtues to personal emotions. The virtue and character conceptions of the positive psychologist's could be doubted to reflect America's long and current positive mass culture and individualism. Secondly, in spite of his claiming for his Aristotelian orientation, Seligman's understanding of Aristotle's virtue ethics is insufficient or problematic especially about the unity and integration of character, relation between cognition and feeling or emotion, eudaimonia, phronesis, akrasia or enkratia. Thirdly, A. MacIntyre could criticize that Seligman overlooks the influence of social practices and tradition, community on building personal virtues and character, and that his reduction of moral virtues to psychological inclinations could result in people's distortion about morality or ethics, while keeping modern capitalistic values such as individualism or emotivism continuing dominant so that positive psychology could make it possible for person who has his own nonmoral or immoral feelings without actually being so to seem virtuous. Lastly, our ethics education should require scientific and normative examination and correcting of those mistakes not to confuse moral virtues with positive emotions before intending to import and apply it to education fields.
