Koreans in Sakhalin are people who immigrated to Sakhalin through recruitment, an employment agency, or forcible draft around 1940 as part of the policy of mobilizing human resources during the Japanese colonial rule. Of the first generation, the main stream consisted of people from Gyeongsang-do, who exceeded 70% of the total. This study reviewed the immigration history from Gyeongsang-do to Sakhalin focusing on the first generation immigrants. With an emphasis on the major cities that witnessed the immigration history of Koreans to Sakhalin including Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Vyikov, and Korsakov, the study analyzed the immigration process, settlement, and life afterward of the first generation immigrants from Gyeongsang-do from a diasporan perspective. Through the immigration history of Koreans to Sakhalin, which is symbolized as “an island of exile and sorrow”, the purpose of this study is to perceive again the reality and historical meaning of the immigration history of Koreans. In particular, it will be possible to see the meaning of a region or hometown for immigrants and how the meaning has been restructured through the immigration history of Gyeongsang-do.
