The aim of this study is to explore the impact of social control on fear of crime. The concept of social control is formed from two types, the one is a formal social control and the other is an informal social control. The variable of the formal control consists of “community policing”, while that of the informal control includes “social cohesion and trust” and “willingness to intervene” derived from the “collective efficacy”(Sampson et al., 1997). This study uses the secondary data from National Crime Victimization Survey in 2008. Thus, except the willingness to intervene, “community policing” and “social cohesion and trust” play a role. Given these finding, this study suggests alternatives against the fear of crime as follows; First, it is necessary to expand the formal control agency's discretion and the role. Especially, the police should increase patrol visibility and cooperate with local facilities which is easy to approach to the residents. In addition, the formal control agency must implement the policy which helps to reduce women's excessively high level of the fear of crime. Second, it is necessary to strengthen the social cohesion and trust in hot-spots.

이 연구는 사회통제 인식과 범죄두려움의 관계를 탐구한다. 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치는 지역적 차원의 통제요인을 공식적ㆍ비공식적 통제로 구분하여 범죄두려움에 어느 정도 영향을 미치는지 살펴보는 것이 이 연구의 주된 목적 이다. 공식적 통제 인식의 경우 지역사회 경찰활동을, 비공식적 통제 인식의 경우 집합효율성의 개념을 차용하되 요인분석에 의해 지역사회의 유대와 지역 주민의 개입의지로 구분한다. 종속변수인 범죄 두려움은 위험의 인지와 구분 하여 정서적 측면을 측정한다. 관련 변수 및 자료 분석을 위해 2008년에 형사정책연구원에서 실시한 ‘전 국범죄피해조사’ 데이터를 이용하여 빈도분석, 변수간의 상관관계 분석 및 다중회귀 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 지역사회 경찰활동에 대한 인식이 높을수록, 지역사회의 유대가 강하다고 인식할수록 범죄두려움이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 지역주민의 개입의지의 경우 통계적으로 유의미한 영향력을 행사하지 못하였다. 마지막으 로 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과 다른 변수들을 통제했을 때, 성별, 연령, 가구소득, 교육수준, 범죄피해 여부가 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나타났다.
