One might easily conclude that one essential part of studying art history consists in the reading of contexts by analyzing forms. Forthose studying the history of handicraft, form is particularly important. As suggested by the famous phrase, “Form follows function,”the form of an object carries, in addition to the one perceived through visual images, the meaning of its veryexistence. There are numerous factors to consider when studying the form of an object, in particular, why a specific form is selected rather than what characteristics it has and which environment they belong to. In-depth understanding of the cultural context contained in the fom will be possible only after such factors are explained. Unfortunately, however, studies of the history of Korean handicraft have not differed greatly from those of the history of sculpture orpainting. The history of research on Korean handicraft is fairly long now, but little progress has been made so far. In this study, I focus on Korean traditional tableware and tray tables (soban) to find the internal and external factors related with theirforms, including the factors that have played a key role in determining the forms. I have found that the makers of kitchen items in thepast had little influence upon the form of their artifacts. The dominant factors were rather the user’s everyday habits, physical conditions, and living environment. The form of these objects was materialized through a combination of the artisan’s imagination and the users’ lifestyle, the history and culture of their community, and the natural environment surrounding them. The artisans served as a medium effectively linking theirown aesthetic sensibilities with the practical demands of society. That is why I conclude that the form of an object is tightly intertwined with the maker’s entire life as an artist and hence it is both the memory of human civilization and a social form.

미술사는 형태를 분석하여 문맥을 읽어내는 학문이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 특히 공예사에서는 형태가 차지하는 비 중이 막중할 수밖에 없다. ‘형태는 기능을 따른다.’는 명제를 기억한다면, 기물의 형태는 시각 이미지를 통해 포착 되는 것 외에도 그 대상의 존재의미와 맞닿은 무게를 지니게 되기 때문이다. 따라서 기물의 형태를 연구할 때 고려해야 할 것들이 참으로 많다고 느낀다. 기형이 어떤 특징을 지녔고, 형식의 계 통이 어떠한지를 궁금해하기에 앞서 특정한 기형이 왜 만들어졌는지를 먼저 생각해야 한다고 믿는다. 이를 통해서 비로소 기형에 내포된 문화적 맥락을 입체적으로 밝힐 수가 있기 때문이다. 그럼에도 지금까지의 공예사 연구는 조각사나 회화사의 형식 분석틀과 크게 다르지 않았었다. 공예사 연구의 연조가 결코 짧지 않은 오늘날에도 이런 경향이 여전하다면 재고할 여지가 충분하다고 본다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 식기와 소반을 중심으로 하여 기형과 연관된 내외부적 요소들이 무엇이며, 기형의 결정에 어 떤 요소가 작용하는지 파악해보았다. 그 결과 전통사회에서 기물의 형태를 결정하는데 제작 주체인 장인의 역할이 의외로 크지 않다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 기물의 형태가 결정되기까지는 사용주체의 생활관습을 정점으로 신체조 건과 주거환경, 기물끼리 거미줄처럼 촘촘히 연결되어 있었다. 장인을 축으로 하여 쓸모와 생활양식, 주거와 역사 문화, 자연환경이 외포를 이루어 연동되는 구조이다. 장인은 사 회적 기본 형태를 능숙한 솜씨로 구현하는 매개자의 역할을 수행했다. 이렇게 본다면 하나의 기물 형태는 사용자의 삶 전체와 치밀하게 교직되어 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 필자가 기물의 형태를 문명의 기억이자 사회적 형태라고 말하는 것도 여기에 근거한다.
