The article aims to review the disciplinary distinctiveness of the politics of education. It is the 20th anniversary of the establishment for Korean Society for the Politics of Education(KSPE) that stirs up undertaking this study. For this, the author concentrates on the academic relations between politics of education and educational administration. The results of this study are as follows. First, educational administration is basically rooted in an organizational administrative tradition. Second, on the other hand politics of education has the characteristics of complimentary goods of educational administration, which extends the domains of research. Third, politics of education also has the disciplinary identity of the substitute for educational administration. Fourth, especially on the latter dimension we can not say any definite conclusions as the relations between the two are now evolving.

이 연구는 한국교육정치학회 창립 20주년을 맞이하여 교육정치학의 학문적 성격을 검토해보려는 목적에서 마련되었다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 특별히 교육행정학과의 관계에 주목하고 있다. 연구 결과는 다음 네 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 교육행정학은 19세기 말 효율 위주의 행정개혁운동을 배경으로 등장하여 관리론적 행정학 전통을 지니게 된다. 둘째, 이에 비해 교육정치학은 관리론적 전통의 교육행정학이 관심을 두지 못했던 교육정치(educational politics) 영역으로 연구관심을 확장했다는 점에서 교육행정학의 보완재적 성격이 짙다. 셋째, 나아가 교육정치학은 교육행정학의 대체재적 성격도 함께 지니고 있다할 수 있다. 교육정치학이 정치-행정 이원론을 넘어 정치-행정 일원론으로 교육행정학을 재구성하려는 학문적 대응이었다는 점에서 그러하다. 넷째, 그러나 어느 하나가 다른 하나를 포섭 내지 압도할 수준이라고 말할 단계는 아니며, 향후 대체재 차원에서 양자의 관계가 어떻게 전개될지는 좀 더 두고 볼 필요가 있다.
