The purpose of this study was to find factors of school change through studying the case of a small-size school overcoming a school closing crisis; and moreover to explore new factors explaining school change as well. Qualitative research method was used, analyzing newspaper articles etc. and interviewing teachers, parents, students and community leaders at the J elementary D branch school. The study identified such factors influencing school change of J elementary D branch school as human factor, social․environmental factor, and physical factor. As of human factor, a teacher’s devoted effort for ethical education was found to play an important role. Regarding social․environmental factor, the community or the village headman’s philosophy and leadership was a key factor. And the study found a new interesting factor of school change. It is a physical factor, change of school building color design by a big business organization. Namely, this case study shows that not only such factors of school change as school members and the community found to be important by the previous studies but also such social and environmental factor as the color project implemented by the outside business organization had a considerable effect on school change. The project was effective in commercializing the school and motivating school members commitment to continuous development of the school coming from their pride of artistry and symbolic values of their school.

본 연구는 소규모 학교의 폐교 위기 극복 사례를 바탕으로 학교 변화 요인을 확인하고, 더불어 새로운 요인을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 신문기사, 방송 자료 등을 분석하고 사례학교인 J초등학교 D분교의 교사, 학부모, 학생, 지역사회 인사와 면담을 통한 질적 연구 방법을 활용하였다. 연구 결과, D분교의 학교 변화 요인은 인적 요인, 사회․환경적 요인, 물적 요인이 작용한 것으로 나타났다. 인적 요인으로 는 인성 교육 함양을 위한 교사의 헌신적인 노력이 있었으며, 사회․환경적 요인으로는 지역사회, 즉 이장의 마을 운영 철학 과 리더십이 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 이 사례에서 주목할 만한 것은 사회․환경적 영향으로 인한 물적 요인으로, 외부 기업의 극적이고 우연적인 개입으로 일어난 학교 외관의 변화와 홍보 효과다. 뜻하지 않게 S기업의 신제품 홍보를 위한 컬러 프로 젝트의 동영상 촬영지로 선정된 이후 D분교는 커다란 변화를 겪었다. 그것은 학교 홍보 효과를 줄 뿐만 아니라, 예술성, 상 징성을 통해 학교의 지속적 변화를 촉진하고 있다. 본 연구는 과거의 학교 변화 연구에서는 포착해내지 못했던 요인과 그 영향을 규명했다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
