The purpose of this study was to explore elementary schools' multicultural education curricula for all students. For this purpose, I as a researcher conducted a qualitative case study in an attempt to compare and contrast multicultral education curricula created and implemented in three elementary experimental schools for multicutlural education. I collected the research data: in-depth interviews with three teachers, curriculum documents, observations, and field notes from three elementary schools. Five themes emerged through the data analysis of this study, which are outlined below: formulation of objectives as increasing cultural understanding for awareness of diversity, and reducing prejudice and changing perceptions; selection of content as focusing on foreign cultures; organization of content considering students' developmental levels and in the sequence of knowledge, skills, and value; evaluation as focusing on knowledge; implementation using regular curricula, adaptable and flexible curricula, and extra curricula activities. This study provides an understanding ofmulticultural education curriculumdevelopment and implementation and an useful information and implications with teachers who are developing and implementing multucultural curricula.

본 연구의 목적은 모든 학생을 대상으로 하는 초등학교 다문화교육 교육과정의 사례를 탐구하는 것이다. 이에 세 다문화교육 시범 초등학교에서 개발, 운영된 다문화교육 교육과정 사례를 비교, 분석하는 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 다문화교육을 담당하는 세 교사들과의 심층면접, 학교별 교육과정 문서, 학교들을 방문하며 작성한 현장일지 등의 질적 자료가 수집되고 분석되었다. 본 연구 분석 결과 다문화교육 교육과정 양상의 다섯 가지 범주가 도출되었는데, 다양성 인식을 위한 타 문화이해와 편견해소 및 인식전환의 교육과정 목표 설정, 외국 문화요소의 내용 선정, 학년별 발달에 초점을 두고 지식·이해, 기능, 가치·태도 순으로 한 내용 조직, 기능 및 가치·태도보다는 지식이해 측면의 평가, 교과시간, 재량활동시간, 비교과 활동 시간을 활용한 교육과정 운영이 그것이다. 본 연구는 교사를 포함한 학교 다문화교육 수행의 주체들에게 학교 다문화교육 교육과정의 실행 양상에 대한 이해와 다문화교육 교육과정 개발과 운영에 활용할 수 있는 정보와 제언 및 함의를 제공하였다는 데에 의의를 지닌다.
