The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of the link between socially prescribed perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies as a academic procrastination by examining the role of self-efficacy as a mediator in the relationship. Data were collected from 280 students in high schools. For the analyses of the mediating effects, we used Baron and Kenny steps and stepwise regression. The results of this study showed that students with high socially prescribed perfectionism procrastinated more than others. It was also found that the sub-dimensions (self-confidence and self-regulatory efficacy) of self-efficacy fully and partially, mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies. But there was not significant mediating effects between self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies. Implications of this study were discussed.

이 연구는 완벽주의 성향의 고등학생이 채택할 수 있는 자아핸디캡전략을 완화할 수 있는 요인으로서 자아효능감에 주목하여, 고등학생들의 완벽주의(자기지향적, 타인지향적, 사회부과적)와 학습지연전략으로서의 자아핸디캡전략간 관계에서 자아효능감의 매개효과를 검증하고 있다. 고등학생 280명(남:166명, 여:114명)을 대상으로 수집된 자료는 상관관계분석, 다변량분석 및 중다회귀분석을 통한 Baron과 Kenny(1986)의 매개효과 검증 절차에 따라 분석되었다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회부과적 완벽주의 성향만 자아핸디캡전략과 유의미한 정적 상관관계를 보이고 있다. 둘째, 집단 간 차이검증 결과, 자기지향완벽주의는 자기조절효능감에서만 유의미한 차이를 보이고 있고, 사회부과적 완벽주의는 자아효능감과 자아핸디캡전략 모두 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보이고 있다. 타인지향적 완벽주의는 집단간 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 셋째, 매개효과 검증결과, 사회부과적 완벽주의가 자아핸디캡전략에 유의미한 직접효과를 나타내고 있지만 자아효능감(자신감)을 매개로 하였을 때 사회부과적 완벽주의의 직접효과는 사라지고 매개변인인 자신감의 직접효과가 증대됨으로써 자신감은 자아핸디캡전략에 대한 완전매개효과를 보이고 있다. 그리고 자아효능감(자기조절효능감)을 매개변인으로 하였을 때 자아효능감을 매개하지 않았을 때에 비하여 사회부과적 완벽주의의 직접효과가 감소함으로써 자기조절효능감은 부분매개효과를 나타내었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 고등학생의 학업수행지연을 완화하기 위하여 자아효능감 향상 프로그램의 개발 필요성에 대하여 논의하였다.
