The Finnish research-based teacher education leans on the idea that teacher's professional development should be supported as a process continuing throughout the work career. The practical aspects and theoretical basis of teacher's work are seen as complementary to each other, not as opposites. Hence, the curricula place emphasis on process goals rather than on the contents to be learnt or on objectives related to students' post-training behaviour. Teacher's professional development is a lifelong process. Teachers should, therefore, be able to reflect on the processes of learning and teaching through an ongoing engagement with subject knowledge, curriculum content, pedagogy, innovation, research, and the social and cultural dimensions of education.
