The purposes of the paper are to introduce a contemporary metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and to uncover how metaphor analysis based on the theory could be applied to a specific teacher education research study on mentoring of student teachers. Though individuals are unaware of their uses, metaphors are pervasive in everyday life and reflect their worldviews in a systematic way. By examining the teachers' metaphors, this study reveals in what ways those teachers perceived effective mentoring. "Student Teacher is a Flower," "Mentoring is Watching," "Mentoring is Sharing," "Student Teaching is a War," and "Mentor is an Owner" were among the primary metaphors found. These metaphors implied that mentor teachers' non-authoritative relationship with student teachers is essential to lead to successful student teaching experiences.
