In this paper we summarize the current feature of Korean regional stetistics, and check if there is any field to be needed to be amend, and look into how we could supply more sufficient regional statistics for regional government and research entity, and improve the Korean regional statistics environment. Korean regional statistics can be improved through strengthen regional sample in national level statistics, and using local government internal data, and building DB system for regional statistics, and utilizing micro data and small area estimation technique, and adopting regional zones statistics system and enabling basic statistical zone statistics utilizatation. We suggest some amendment about setting standards of statistical service business, and asking national statistical office consulting service, and establishing regional statistics commission by each local government. and strengthen man power and budget of statistical department of local government.

본 논문은 지역통계 현황과 지역통계에 대한 수요, 통계청의 지역통계 정책과 함께 지 역통계가 부족한 상황을 개선하기 위한 방안을 내용으로 한다. 지자체 실시 이후 20여년 이 경과하였으나 지자체가 필요한 지역통계는 아직 많이 부족하다. 선행 연구결과에 의 하면 이는 지자체의 지역통계 중요성에 대한 인식 부족, 인력 및 예산 투자 부족, 전국단 위 통계의 지역별 표본수 부족, 행정자료 활용 불충분, 지역통계 DB구축 부진 등에 기인 한다. 현재 상황에서 현실적 대안으로는 지역통계 표본설계 확충, 지역 행정자료 활용, 지역통계 DB체계 구축, 마이크로데이터 활용, 소지역추정기법 활용, 광역권통계·기초단 위구통계 활용, 지역통계 편제용역기준 제정, 통계컨설팅 지원 요청, 지자체별 통계위원 회 운영, 지자체 통계 인력 및 예산 확충 등을 생각할 수 있다.
