This paper analyzes the impacts of FDI inflow on vertical and horizontal export diversification based on a balanced panel data of 40 African and 12 East Asian countries from 1995 to 2010. The study employed a GLS Random Effect Estimation Method with corrected heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. The empirical result suggests a one percent increase in the ratio of FDI to GDP triggers a 5.6 and 14 percentage points’ increases in vertical export diversification in Africa and East Asia, respectively. Similarly, a one percent increase in the ratio of FDI to GDP results an increase in 0.035 units in the horizontal export diversification index in East Asia, but no evidence found for FDI to induce horizontal export diversification in Africa. Other important control variables found to be essentials for diversification include: income per capita, quality of infrastructure, population size and degree of openness. The key lesson for Africa from East Asia implies the contributions of FDI towards to value-added export diversification and structural change may in part depends on the interactions of other institutions and policy measures including investment in human capital and physical infrastructure together with stable macroeconomic environment and more degree of openness.

본 연구는 수직적/수평적 수출 다변화에 따른 외국인직접 투자의 영향을 분석한 것이다. 분석에는 40개 아프리카국가들과 12개의 동아시아국가들의 1995년부터 2010년까지의 패널 데이터를 이용하였다. 본 연구에서는 수정된 헤트로스케다시티와 자동 상관관계가 동반된 GLS 랜덤효과 예측방법을 활용하였다. 분석결과 아프리카와 아시아의 경우 외국인 직접 투자와 GDP 의 비율이 1% 증가함에 따라, 아프리카는 5.6% 아시아는 14% 증가하는 것 으로 나타났다. 한편, 외국인직접투자와 GDP 의 비율이 1% 증가하면 동아시아의 경우 수평적 수출다변화가 0.035 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 아프리카는 변화가 없는 것으로 나 타났다. 수출 다변화의 다른 중요한 변수들은 소득수준, 인프라 수준, 인구규모와 개방정 도 등이 포함된다. 중요한 의미는 아프리카는 아시아의 경험에서 외국인직접투자가 수출 다변화와 연계되도록 하고 인적자원에 대한 투자, 인프라건설 및 안정적이 거시경제를 유지하며 개방의 속도를 늘리는 것이 중요한 것으로 결론지을 수 있다.
