This study trace the position of inference as the inference skill and aims to find significance of abductive thinking in social inquiry. To construct an hypothesis in social studies inquiry instruction is what will make or break the inquiry. In this process of constructing an hypothesis, the abductive thinking plays a key role in the way that it helps the student to construct a creative and ampliative hypothesis. Although the abductive thinking is very important, it is almost impossible to find concrete arguments about abductive thinking, especially in social studies or social inquiry. At this, this writer pursues the position of inference in inquiry to determine significance of abductive thinking. Also I look deep into the significance of inference as a logic of inquiry through a study of inference as a thinking skill thinking and types of inference as well. This trace meaning and nature of the abduction as an explanatory hypothesis. As the result, this study find that the abductive thinking is the main factor as an explanatory hypothesis to construct an hypothesis in social inquiry. This can get a foothold to construct an hypothesis and contributed to the successful inquiry by leading the authentic inquiry process.

본 논문의 목적은 탐구에서 추론의 위치를 추론 기능을 중심으로 접근함으로써 사회탐구에서 가 추적 사고의 의의를 밝히는 데 있다. 사회과 탐구수업에서 학습자에게 가설을 구성하도록 하는 것은 탐구 의 성패를 좌우하는데, 이러한 가설 구성 과정에 있어서 가추적 사고는 보다 창조적이고 확장적인 설명적 가설을 구성하도록 한다는 점에서 핵심적 사고라 할 수 있다. 하지만 이러한 가추적 사고의 중요성에도 불 구하고 가추적 사고에 관한 논의는 거의 찾아볼 수가 없을 뿐만 아니라 특히, 사회과 혹은 사회탐구에서 더욱 등한시되었다. 이러한 이유로 필자는 사회탐구에서 가추적 사고의 의의를 밝히기 위해 먼저 탐구에 서 추론의 위치를 살펴보았다. 또한, 사고기능으서 추론과 추론의 유형에 대한 연구를 통해 탐구논리로서 추론의 의의를 설명하였다. 이를 바탕으로 설명적 가설로서 가추의 의미와 성격을 밝혀 보았다. 필자가 밝 혀본 바, 사회탐구에서 창조적이고 확장적인 가설 구성을 하는데 가추적 사고는 설명적 가설로서 작용한 다. 이는 가설 구성을 위한 발판을 마련하고 실제적인 탐구과정을 이끌어 성공적인 탐구를 수행하는데 공 헌할 수 있을 것이다.
