Research activity is one of the essential elements to be enjoyed by an academic community including undergraduate students in higher education, and being capable of research has great significance in the educational roles of universities. However, previous research on ability to research have revealed the limitations in that not only emphasize the outcomes rather than the process itself but also technical rationalism based on the exclusive empirical epistemology. Therefore, this study aims to conceptualize 'research activity knowledge' as an alternative concept of a frame of personal and tacit knowledge which is formed in enjoying the intrinsic value of research during experiencing research process in an internal disciplined way. Through a case study of 'Undergraduate Student Research' in S University, it is confirmed that this research activity knowledge can be shaped by apprenticeship including students' enthusiastic practices and guided participation.

연구는 대학의 교육주체들이 향유해야할 본질적 활동 가운데 하나이며, 대학교육을 통한 연구활동 자질의 함양은 대학의 기능수행에 큰 의의를 가진다. 연구를 수행하는 능력에 대한 기존 접근은 경험과학적 인식론에 터한 기술적합리주의의 오류, 연구자체 보다는 그 결과를 우선시하는 도 구주의적 오류, 그리고 함양과정 없는 체득의 무교육주의의 오류를 가지 고 있었다. 이를 넘어서는 대안적 개념으로 연구를 그 자체의 규칙에 따 라 수행하면서 내적 가치를 향유하는 암묵적이며 전인격적인 지식체로서 ‘연구활동지식’이 있다. 이러한 지식은 언어적 전달이 아니라 실천과 지 도된 참여로 이루어지는 도제적 활동으로 발전이 가능하다. 대학의 교과 목 가운데 학생들이 스스로 연구주제를 선정하여 연구를 수행하는‘ 자율 연구’는 이러한 연구활동지식을 발전시킴으로써 바람직한 연구활동을 수 행할 수있는 능력의 발달에 기여할 수 있다. 본 연구는 학생자율연구 교과 목에서 연구활동지식이 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 그것이 가진 기제를 통 하여 살펴보고 어떠한 기제를 가지고 있어서 연구활동지식이 발전할 수 있는지, 또한 어떠한 연구활동지식의 요소의 발전이 두드러지는지 살펴 보고자한다.
