This paper is an analysis on the Korean Diasporas represented in Ju Yo Seop's novels. He left his home in Pyeongyang at an early age and went on a long journey of studying abroad in Tokyo, Shanghai, California (America). After finishing his studies, Ju Yo-seop returned home and stayed in Seoul for some time and moved to Beijing shortly and lived there until he was expelled. During his long studying and staying abroad, Ju Yo-seop interacted with many Korean Diasporas, who are represented in his novels as the students studying abroad seeking their dreams, poor laborers seeking a land of gold, women of adverse fortune, and so-called 'Seonsengnim,' gentlemen in Western clothes. The characteristics of the Korean Diasporas represented in Ju Yo- seop's novels are as follows. First, they embody the image of the student studying abroad who is wandering between national mission and personal desire. Second, through the migrant workers who have hard times in settling down, it is underlined that America is ‘a land of gold’ for the white people, but is 'a wasteland' impossible to take root for the Korean Diasporas. Third, they tragically embody the women who are wandering abroad. The present writer also corrected the existing errors about Ju Yo- seop, and expects that this will lead to the opportunity to reevaluate Ju Yo-seop literature which is still undervalued despite its brilliant literary

이 글은 여심(餘心) 주요섭 소설에 재현된 코리안 디아스포라를 분석한 것이다. 주요섭은 일찍부터 고향인 평양을 벗어나 동경(東京)과 상해, 캘리포니아(미국)로 이어진 기나긴 유학길에 올랐다. 학업을 마친 후 귀국한 요섭은 얼마간 서울에 머물 다 이내 북경으로 이주하여 그곳에서 추방될 때까지 생활하였다. 주요섭은 장기간의 해외유학과 해외 체류 과정에서 다수의 코리안 디아스포라들과 교류하였는데, 이들은 꿈을 찾아 온 유학 생과 황금의 땅을 찾아온 가난한 노동자, 기구한 운명의 여성, 그리고 이른바 ‘선생님’으로 대변되는 양복 입은 신사 등으로 작품 속에서 재현된다. 주요섭 소설에 재현된 코리안 디아스포라들의 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 민족적 사명과 개인적 욕망 사이에서 방황하고 있 는 유학생의 모습을 유학생을 통해 식민지 청년 지식인의 고뇌를 형상화 한다. 둘째, 정주에 어려움을 겪고 있는 이주 노동 자를 통해 백인들에게는 ‘황금의 땅’인 미국이 코리안 디아스포라들에게는 뿌리 내릴 수 없는 ‘불모의 땅’이라는 점을 강조한 다. 셋째, 해외를 떠도는 여성들을 비극적으로 형상화하는 것을 통해 전통적인 가부장적 질서의 해체에 대한 불안 의식을 드 러낸다. 덧붙여 주요섭에 관한 기존 오류를 수정하기도 했는데, 이것이 빛나는 문학적 성과에도 불구하고 여전히 저평가 되고 있는 주요섭 문학을 재평가 하는 기회로 이어지길 기대한다.
