The article starts with the notion of reinterpreting Christian realism that can help a community of faith to reflect and practice its shared values and beliefs in the socio-political realm. The reason why I am concerned with the relation between the practice of church as a community of faith and Christian realism is this: Christian realism’s deep understanding of human collective sinfulness and of history interrupted by God could provide us with a basic framework with which we can more relevantly understand social evils that a community of faith cannot help but confront in the socio-political realm. By understanding of the paradoxical tensions between self-transcendence as freedom and finitude in human beings, ideal and limitation in history, and the absolute and the relative in the socio-political realm, Reinhold Niebuhr shows a community of faith a possibility of self-correcting process rather than self-sufficient practices in the society. Christian realism can be criticized because of its tendency to maintain the status-quo, to be compromised with dominant political powers, and to ignore the marginalized /the decentered. However, its self-critical power on collective sinfulness and social analytical power on distorted relations make it possible that church as a community of faith continues to participate in ‘moral reflection and practice as a whole’ as a self-correcting process. The notion of ‘balance of power’ can be reinterpreted as a process of building countervailing powers in which a community of faith can participate and the notion of ‘an approximate approach’ can be reinterpreted not as a compromising process but as a ongoing self- metanoia, that is, a self-corrective process. To support these reinterpretations, on the one hand, Bonnino’s emphasis on “utopia-genetic potentiality of Christian hope” as a radical motivating power has to be included in realistic thinking and approaches. On the other hand, according to Bennett’s revision of Christian realism, a strategic concentration on the oppressed/the marginalized/the decentered has to be located in the juncture between a community of faith and Christian realism in order to support continual ‘moral reflection and practice as a whole’ in the socio-political realm.

본 논문은 사회 정치적 영역에 놓여있는 신앙공동체인 교회가 실제적인 도덕적 숙고와 실천을 이루어가기 위 한 도움을 기독교 현실주의의 재해석으로부터 얻고자 하는 관심으로부터 출발한다. 기독교 현실주의와 신앙 공동체의 실천의 관계성에 관심하는 이유는 기독교 현실주의가 여전히 인간의 집단적 죄성에 관한 깊은 인식 과 하나님의 역사에 대한 전적인 개입이란 역사발전에 관한 이해를 통해 사회 정치적 영역에서 신앙공동체가 직면하는 사회적 악의 문제를 보다 사실적합하게 이해할 사고의 틀을 제공해 줄 수 있다고 여겨지기 때문이 다. 니버가 인간의 자기초월성과 유한성, 역사 가운데 이상과 한계, 절대와 상대의 영역을 긴장관계로 이해함 으로써, 신앙공동체가 쉽게 빠질 수 있는 자기만족적 실천보다는 자기성찰적 실천의 가능성을 제시한다. 기독교 현실주의가 체제유지적 경향성을 가지고 있으며, 사회 정치 영역 내의 힘없는 자들을 소외시킨다는 비판, 그리고 현실 사회 정치영역에서 타협주의적 성격을 보인다는 비판을 점검하면서도, 본 논문은 기독교 현실주의의 지속적 관심인 집단적 이기성에 관한 자기 비판적 사고와 현실분석적 사고를 강조한다. 이러한 특성들이 신앙공동체의 도덕적 성찰과 실천에 지속적인 자기 교정적 실천을 가능하게 할 수 있다고 보았다. 타협적 힘의 균형이란 관심으로부터 시작해서 대항적 권력을 형성하는 과제에 신앙공동체가 참여하도록 하 는 동기와 과제로, 그리고 타협주의적인 ‘근사치적 접근’이 아니라 부단한 자기성찰적/ 자기교정적 실천이란 접근으로 재해석하고자 하였다. 이를 위한 기독교 현실주의 재해석을 위해서, 1) 해방신학자 호세 미구에즈 보니노로부터 유토피아적 사고로서의 기독교 소망을 강력한 실천의 추동력으로 현실주의적 사고에 접목하려 시도할 필요가 있음을 지적하였고, 2) 존 베네트의 지적처럼, 억눌린 자들에 대한 전략적 집중이 기독교 현실 주의와 신앙공동체의 관계성에 지속적인 성찰의 지점이 되어야 함을 강조하였다. 이를 통해서 신앙공동체가 사회 정치적 영역에서의 도덕적 주체로 자리매김하는 기회를 삼아야 할 것이다.
