The senior population of contemporary Korean society is ever increasing and with this shift in demographic, certain issues and problems have arisen concerning the elderly. The aim of this study is to examine the Christian Education needs of the elderly as they face the issues and challenges specific to the new demographic in our rapidly aging society. The issues and challenges of the elderly are not only problems for society in general but is also ones of the church. The elderly should be recognized and their abilities should not be allowed to deteriorate within our society and the church by encouraging them to have continued participation and influence. The elderly should be viewed as persons of matured faith and encouraged to continue in their spiritual growth. As with young children, teens, young adults and the middle-aged alike, the fact that the elderly should also be a target group for continued Christian Education should not be forgotten. The elderly should be guided in their final stage of life not only to live solely within the grace of God but to actively lead their lives to a meaningful fruition by turning their existence to the glory of God. In this, the church must meet the Christian education needs of the elderly. In other words, the church must develop and then implement a detailed and practical Christian education program specifically for the elderly that will guide them to lead happy and meaningful Christian lives. For this purpose, Christian education targeted for the elderly must provide various alternatives for them to overcome the issues and challenges they specifically face. In this study, there will be a general discussion about Christian education for the elderly and its challenges and needs. Following, there is an examination of the development and implementation of the aim and content of this target-specific education for the elderly. Moreover, this study will suggest further study in the area of caring for the Christian education needs of the elderly.

본 연구는 우리 사회가 빠른 속도로 고령화 사회로의 진입하면서 노인들이 가지고 있는 문제들에 대하여 기 독교교육적인 돌봄의 과제를 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 우리사회는 노인 인구의 증가로 고령화 사회가 되 어가고 있으며, 노인과 고령화 추세를 사회문제로 다루고 있다. 그러나 노인과 고령화의 문제는 사회의 문제 뿐 아니라 교회의 문제이기도 하다. 교회에서는 노인들의 능력이 사장되지 않고 사회와 교회 안에서 지속적으로 영향을 줄 수 있도록 격려 받아 야 되는 존재이다. 그리고 성숙한 신앙인으로서 계속 성장시켜 나가야 할 존재로 보아야 한다. 노인들도 아동 이나 청소년, 청년과 장년 등과 똑같이 끊임없이 그 믿음이 자라가야 할 기독교교육의 대상임을 잊어서는 안 된다. 그러므로 한국교회는 노인들이 인생주기의 마지막 단계인 노년기를 하나님의 은총 안에서 보다 적극적 으로 맞이하고 의미 있는 삶의 결실을 맺고, 하나님께 영광 돌릴 수 있도록 도와야 한다. 이를 위해서는 노인 들의 욕구에 부합하는 교회 노인교육이 개발되고, 나아가 활성화되어야 한다. 즉 노인의 삶에 적합하며 그들 의 행복한 노후생활을 위한 구체적이며 실질적인 교회 노인교육이 개발되고 활성화되어야 할 필요가 있는 것 이다. 이를 위해서 교회의 기독교교육은 노인을 대상으로 그들이 당면하고 있는 다양한 위기들을 극복할 수 있도록 교육적 대안을 제시해야하는 책임이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 먼저, 노인과 노인교육에 대한 일반적 고찰 을 통한 노인교육의 문제점과 필요성을 되짚어보고, 다음으로, 교회는 노인에게 무엇을, 어떻게 교육해야하 는지를 알기 위하여 노인교육의 이해와 교육내용을 살펴 볼 것이다. 그리고 나아가, 앞으로 한국교회에서의 노인교육의 방향성을 제시하기 위하여 노인교육에 대한 기독교 교육적 돌봄의 과제를 살펴볼 것이다.
