A research and education program on the measuring the temperature distribution of an air around a candle flame was carried out. This program was prepared to help the eighth and the ninth grade students understand the basic concepts in optics such as refraction and interference of light, refractive index of gas media and the effects of temperature on the refractive index of an air. From the wave number differences between two light beams due to the candle flame on one path of the Mach-Zender interferometer, the temperature distribution was measured and the obtained two-dimensional average temperature distribution was found to be from 77℃ to 317℃.
