This paper was intended to examine how the scholars in the later period of Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty were aware of 『Shuowenjiezi(說文解字)』 and, at the same time, to look into how they utilized 『Shuowenjiezi』 for interpreting 『Shijing(詩經)』. To do that, the paper tried to examine the position of 『Shuowenjiezi』 at that time, and confirm concrete aspects and meanings of utilization of 『Shuowenjiezi』 for the interpretation and study of 『Shijing』. First of all, through review of ｢Shuowen(說文)｣ of Lee, ik(李瀷), ｢Wenzicewen(文字策問)｣ of Zheng-jo(正祖 ) and Duicewen(對策文) of vassals, ｢Qianwenping(千文評)｣ of Jung, yak-yong(丁若鏞), 『Shuowenjieziyizheng(說文解字翼徵)』 of Park, sun-soo(朴瑄壽), etc., looked into the recognition of 『Shuowenjiezi』the scholars of the later period of Joseon Dynasty had. The scholars said that 『Shuowenjiezi』 is the most reliable of own writings and the scholars proposed their opinions that 『Shuowenjiezi』was necessary for studying graphonomy and correct use of characters. Meanwhile, they sometimes pointed out errors frequently found in 『Shuowenjiezi』, and also criticized the points that the system was not strict and communion was not completed. Also, the paper, through review of 『Hanguojingxueziliaojicheng(韓國經學資料集成)』, looked into the aspects of utilization of 『Shuowenjiezi』in the interpretation and study of 『Shijing』and the results are as follows. First, 『Shuowenjiezi』was utilized in earnest since the 18th century. Second, Zheng-jo(正祖), Sung, hae-eung(成海應), Jung, yak-yong(丁若鏞), Jung, hak-yoo(丁學遊), Yoon, jung-ki(尹廷琦) including Shin, jak(申綽) et al much quoted for interpreeting 『Shijing』. Third, the main objective of utilization of 『Shuowenjiezi』was to exactly interpret the words or phrases that appear in the main body.

본고는 조선 후기의 학자들이 『說文解字』에 대해 어떠한 인식을 가지고 있었는지에 대해 검토하고, 아울러 『詩經』을 해석하고 연구하기 위해 『설문해자』를 어떻게 활용하였는지에 대해 고찰함을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 통해 당시 『설문해자』의 위상을 알아보고, 『시경』해석과 연구를 위해 『설문해자』를 활용하였던 구체적인 양상 및 의의를 확인하고자 하였다. 먼저, 李瀷의 ｢說文｣, 正祖의 ｢文字策問｣과 신하들의 對策文, 丁若鏞의 ｢千文評｣, 朴瑄壽의 『說文解字翼徵』등에 대한 검토를 통해 조선 후기 학자들이 『설문해자』에 대해 지녔던 인식을 살펴보았다. 그들은 『설문해 자』가 字書의 전범에 해당하는 신뢰할 만한 것이라고 하였으며, 문자의 속성을 잘 파악하여 그것을 연구하고 근본 원리를 통하게 한 것으로 字學 연구와 올바른 문자 사용을 위해서 반드시 필요하다는 견해를 제출하였다 . 또 한편으로는 『설문해자』에 종종 보이는 오류를 지적하기도 하였으며, 체재가 엄격하지 못하고 또 교감 이 완전하지 않다는 측면에 대해 비판하기도 하였다. 이어서, 『시경』 해석과 연구에 있어서 『설문해자』를 활용한 양상에 대해 살펴보았다. 『한국경학자료집 성』에 대한 검토를 통해 시기적으로 18세기 이후에 『설문해자』를 본격적으로 활용하였음을 확인하였고, 특히 申綽을 비롯하여 正祖, 成海應, 丁若鏞, 丁學遊, 尹廷琦 등이『시경』 해석을 위해『설문해자』를 다수 인용하였음을 살펴보았다. 『시경』 해석을 위한 『설문해자』의 활용 양상을 살펴본 결과, 『설문해자』의 주된 활용 목적은 경문에 나 오는 글자나 구절을 정확하게 풀이하기 위한 것이었음을 확인하였다. 즉 『설문해자』의 활용은 그 내용에서 특징을 찾기 보다는 경서에 대한 훈고와 고증 작업을 진행하기 위해 소학적 방법론으로 사용되었다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾아야 함을 언급하였다. 또한 박선수의 『설문해자익징』에서 『설문해자』의 해석에 수정을 가한 후에 이를 『시경』 해석에 적용하 여 기존 주석과 다른 해석을 제시한 예를 제시함으로써, 『설문해자익징』이 보이고 있는 또 하나의 특징적 면모를 파악하였다.
