The purpose of this study was to examinehow the civil catches some figurative awarenessfrom the urban symbol marks which they lookat everyday life. It is a research forconstructing an urban visual identity. A simple survey is used by regulatoryquestion as: what is given concepts make youcloser to the given visual expressions andcheck it in 5 points-scale. The study conducted25 symbol marks using the 5 figurativeelements(shape, detail, color, line & plan,perspective) to determine a ranking of theelements relevant the civil's awareness. It has come to the conclusion that the morein shaping expression, the level of awareness ishigher with the details in shapes. The lessawareness in the color expression, line & planas well as perspective. These results confirmsthat the symbol marks which were visualized intheir shape maintain their some identification insuccess, but not in color, line & plan andperspective, which could be used automaticallyin/with the shape in expression. This tendencycould be found in the working process andcognitive process too. Is means that thefigurative-conceptual matching can be comefrom the Seoulite urban life culture, withoutwhich the symbol designing cause seriousdamage to the awareness.

본 연구는 지자체 심벌마크의 조형요소에 대한 시민 인지도를 조사했다. 방법으로는 서울시와 구청의심벌마크 를 시민들에게 보여준 뒤, 어떤 조형의 요소가 지자체의 이미지 발상에 근접하도록 유도하는가를설문 조사하여 이를 데이터화 했다. 26개중 25개 서울시 및 구청의 심벌마크의 조형표현을 전체형태, 세부형태, 색채, 선과 면, 구도의 요소의 5가지 기준에따라 5점 척도화 하였다. 이를 지수로 전환, 어떤 지자체의 조형표현이 가장 높고 낮은 인지도를 가졌는가의 순위를 만들어 낼 수 있었다. 조사결과, 서울시민은 심벌마크의 전체형태를 통해지자체의 개념을 안정적으로 인지하는 습관을 지녔다는 첫 번째 결론에 이르렀다. 물론 조형의 세부형태도 중요시 하는 편이지만 이는 전체형태의 상관관계속에서 이다. 두 번째, 선과 면, 색채, 구도의 요소에있어서 개념 인지도가 현저히 낮다. 다시 말하면 선과 면, 색채, 구도의 요 소는 형태중심적인 디자인 제작과정 및 인지과정에 종속된다. 최종적으로 서울시민이나 디자이너, 지자체 모두심벌마크의 조형표현을 인지하는데 있어 지자체 조형요소 인 지도가 현저히 떨어지는 이유로 발상이 충분하지 못하면 어떤 조형표현이라 하더라도 수용자들에게 적절한 메 시지를 전달하기 어렵다는 사실을 알 수있었다.
