The performing arts has achieved extension of space and time on stage and enhanced expressivity by introducing new technology to the theater, while also strengthening liveliness of performance. It is very important that performers show internal and external characters animatedly on stage, especially in the performing arts, where live performers are the primary medium of communication. Accordingly this study examines the ways to strengthen liveliness of a performance as well as to extend the functionality of costumes by introducing wearable computer technology to stage costume design. For this purpose, after identifying the reasons for applying wearable computer technology, we analyze existing cases of using wearable computer technology in performances, and present the process and outcome of our own case of wearable costume design for a real live performance This study discusses the limitations and future directions of research and development in strengthening liveliness on stage with wearable technologies.

공연예술은 역사적으로 볼 때 언제나 당대의 가장 발전된 기술을 무대 위에 도입함으로써 시공간의 확장과 표현성의 증대를 이뤄냈고, 이를 통해 공연의 생동감(Liveness)을 강화할 수 있었다. 생명체인 퍼포머가 중심이 되는 공연예술에서는 작품 분석에 따른 캐릭터의 내, 외적 성격 구축과 구현을 통해 캐릭터를 생동감 있게 표현하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 캐릭터 표현을 도울 수 있는 무대 의상에 웨어러블 컴퓨터 기술을 도입함으로써 의상 본연의 기능을 확장하는 동시에 공연의 생동감을 강화하는 방법을 연구하고자 한다. 이를 위해 공연예술에의 웨어러블 컴퓨팅 기술 적용 적합 사유를 밝힌 뒤 그 선행 사례들을 분석하였고, 실제 진행된 공연 작품 속 웨어러블 무대 의상 디자인 과정과 그 결과를 정리하였다. 이를 통해 공연예술의 생동감 강화를 위한 방법과 한계점 및 향후 발전 방향을 제안하고자 한다.
