Recent discussions among scholars of world Christianity and mission studies on the changes of demography have focused on the following three aspects of the relationship between churches in the global North and the South: First, recognition of the numerical growth of non-Western Christianity and the rapid decline of the church-going in the Western Europe; second, as a consequence of the first, an acknowledgement that the ‘centre of gravity’ of Christianity has shifted away from the West and that the new forms of Christianity will inevitably influence the churches in the West, changing the ‘traditional’ form of Christianity as a whole; and the third aspect of this change is that missionary movements from the churches in the global South are increasing so thatSebastian Chang-Hwan Kim holds the Chair in Theology and Public Life in the Faculty of Education & Theology at York St John University, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the author of In Search of Identity: Debates on Religious Conversion in India(OUP, 2003), Theology in the Public Sphere(SCM Press, 2011) and co-author of Christianity as a World Religion(Continuum, 2008). He is founding and current Editor of the International Journal of Public Theology. 44 선교와 신학 33집it is no longer ‘mission from the West to the rest’ but missionfrom everywhere to everywhere. In this article, I would like to discuss the situation ofChristianity in contemporary Europe in general and the UKin particular; issues relating to the tensions between religiouscommunities and the wider society; and the difficulties andpossibilities of ‘reverse mission’ and mature partnershiprespectively. I would argue that it is vital for the Koreanchurches to respond to the call for mission in Europe, andthat this call requires radical re-thinking of mission theology,strategy and attitudes based on the concept of the body ofChrist, mature partnership and mutual respect. The dynamicsof Christian missionary movements from South Korea arereceived by global churches with both enthusiasm as a newimpetus for the twenty-first century and cautious concern forauthentic and lasting partnership between the churches inKorea and the West. Some key concepts have been identified in this paper formeeting the challenges of this new era. First, global missionshould be understood and carried out as a manifestationof being in the global body of Christ, which exhibits theinter-connected and interdependent relationships of mutualpartners. Second, there is a consensus that there should becommon mission rather than reverse mission. The latter mightimply the attitudes of moral superiority and triumphalismand employment of aggressive approaches to mission bysome fundamentalist mission groups. Third, for the shared45Sebastian Chang-Hwan Kim Mission in Europe: Mature partnershipidentity and purpose for authentic mission in a new context of globalisation of mission, those who are engaged in mission should acquire a greater sense of humility, cultural sensitivity and willingness to work together. Churches in Korea have a great opportunity and potential to participate in God’s mission in Europe and in order to be faithful witnesses, the Korean churches are called to continue to uphold sincere humility, hospitality and partnership.

세계교회의 변화된 양상에 대한 최근의 선교학자들 간의 토의는 세 가지로 특징적으로 말할 수 있다: 첫째로 비서구 기 독교의 성장과 서유럽교회 출석의 급속한 감소는 기정사실로 받아들이게 되고, 둘째로 기독교의중심이 서구에서 이동 하였으며, 새로운 교회의 양상이 서구의 교회에 영향을 주며 동시에 기독교 전체의 전통적인 형태에 영향을 미칠 것으 로 인식된다는 점이고, 셋째로 남반부에 있는 교회들의 선교운동이 증가하여 선교는 모든 곳으로부터 모든 곳으로의 선 교(from everywhere to everywhere)가이론만이 아닌 실제적으로 이루어지고 있다는 것이다. 본 논문에서 저자는 한국교회가 위에 언급한 세 가지 측면에 있어서 중심에 있다고 보며 그러한 관점에서 한국교회의 유럽선교에 대해 논하고자한다. 이를 위해서 먼저 영국을 비롯한 유럽교회의 상황에 대해 간략하게언급하고 현재 기독 교를 포함한 종교계가 당면한 사항과 함께 유럽선교에대한 가능성에 대해서 토의하고자 한다. 저자는 한국교회가 유럽 에서의 부름에 응답해야 하며 이 사명을 담당하기 위해서는 그리스도의 몸으로서,성숙한 동반사역과 상호존중에 의거 한 선교신학과 전략을 유럽교회와 한국교회가 추구해야 한다고 주장한다. 본 논제에서 주장하는 몇 가지를 간추리면 첫째, 선교의 새로운 장을맞아서 유럽선교는 그리스도의 지체로서의 선교가 되어야 할 것이고 성숙한 파트너로서의 협력관계가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 둘째, 한국교회는 한국교회의 특성과 은사를 유럽에서 접목할 수 있는 방법론과 함께 유럽교회와 사회 그리고 정치에 대한 연구와 관심을 가져야 할 것이다. 셋째, 다른지역의 선교에서도 마찬가지지만 유럽에서의 선교에 임하는 데 문화에 대한 민감함 그리고 인내를 동반한 적극적 인 협력사역이 중요하다. 특히 유럽교회가 강조하는 에큐메니칼 운동, 세속화된 사회에서 공적 신앙생활의김창환 성숙 한 동반자로서 유럽에서의 선교 15어려움, 역사적으로 교회와 정부와의 협력과 갈등에 대해 유럽교회를 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 한국교회가 유럽에서의 하나님의 선교에 동참하는 것은 큰 가능성이 있으며 이를 위해서 한국교회와 유 럽의 교회는 겸손(humility)과 환대(hospitality)로 동반사역(partnership)을 함께 해나가야 할것이다.
