The church in North America is in crisis, but this can be understood as a strategic opportunity. After enjoying a position of prestige and influence in society for several centuries, the modern church is becoming incrreasingly marginal. Postmodern people do not feel at home in the conventional modern church. Concern for the future of the church since the 1980s has resulted in new missiololgical and theololgical work concerning the nature and mission of the church. The traditional ecclesio-centric understanding of mission, inherited from Christendom, must be replaced by a theo-centric understandijng based on the Mission of God, that is the missio Dei. For modern churches to become missional will require a deep reformation, a fundamental reorientation of ecclesial life in North American churches.
