This paper is a study of a model of mission in the Old Testament. The aim of the study is to show the features and significances of the mission appearing through the life of Abraham. The word ‘mission’ etymologically has two meanings which are ‘sending’ and ‘assignment’. By definition, it is clear that mission, in essence, is ‘Missio Dei’ and to preach the ‘gospel of the kingdom of God’. The Old Testament is the love story of God and that the Creator has chosen Israel for the purpose of salvation of all nations. Thus, the very existence of Israel is for the mission. The occupation of the Promised Land, the prosperity of Israel, and even Israelites’ Exile to Babylon contributed to the mission of God for the nations. The features of mission appearing through the life of Abraham can be summarized into three: Abraham accomplished his mission by ‘responding to the calling’, by ‘living’ in the designated place, and by ‘praying’ as a mediator. The life of Abraham is summarized by the word ‘faith’. His whole life is based on the faith in the promise of God that “In you all nations will be blessed” (Gen 12:3). However, Abraham’s faith had to mature and deepen through various stages of his life. The Promise of God to Abraham is the basic plan for Missio Dei. The blessing of Abraham will be achieved when all nations are blessed. All the people who are in the tradition of Abraham’s faith bear his mission. Jesus Christ showed us the example of the life of God’s mission and entrusted his disciples with such a life. Now the life for ‘the blessing of the nations’ or ‘Light of the Gentiles’ is the mission of the Christians who are the disciples of Jesus Christ, and the churches which are the communities of Jesus’ disciples.

본 논문은 구약성서에 나타난 선교의 모델에 관한 연구이다. 아브라함의 삶을 통해 나타난 선교의 특징과 의의를 보여 주는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 선교(mission)는 어원상 ‘보냄’과 ‘사명’의 의미가 있다. 이러한 선교의정의를 통해 선교 는 본질상 ‘하나님의 선교’(missio Dei)이고 ‘하나님 나라의복음’을 전파하는 것임을 알게 된다. 구약성서는 창조주이신 하나님이 열방을 구원하시려는 계획 가운데 이스라엘을 택하신 하나님의 사랑이야기이다. 이스라엘 존재 자체가 선교 를 지향한다. 약속의 땅을 차지하는 것도이스라엘의 번영과 유배까지도 열방을 위한 하나님의 선교에 이바지한다. 아브라함의 삶을 통해 나타나는 선교의 특징은 세 가지로 요약된다. 아브라함은 ‘부르심에 응답’함으로 선교에 임했고, 보내진 곳에서 ‘삶’으로 선교에 임했으며, 중보자로서 ‘기도함’으로 선교에 임했다. 아브라함의 삶은 ‘믿음’이라는 말로 요약된다. 그의 모든 삶은 ‘네 안에서 열방이 복을 얻을 것이다’(창 12:3)는 약속에 대한 믿음에 기초하고 있다. 하지만 아브라함의 믿음은 삶의 여러 과정을 통해 성숙되고 다듬어져야 했다. 아브라함에게 주신 약속은 하나님의 선교의 기본 계획이다. 아브라함의 복은 열방이 복을얻게 될 때 이루어진다. 아브라함의 신앙전승을 이어가는 사람은 모두 아브라함 의 사명을 감당하게 된다. 예수 그리스도가 그러한 삶의 모범을 보여주셨고 제자들에게 그러한 삶을 살도록 위탁하셨다 . 이제 ‘열방을 위한복’이나 ‘이방의 빛’을 위한 삶은 예수의 제자들인 그리스도인들과 예수 제자들의 공동체인 교회가 감당해야 할 사명이다.
