초록

영어

The rapid increase of international migration formulates a new atmosphere. The multicultural family is a new family form created from international marriage. Its bicultural atmosphere initially causes lots of difficulties, namely the problem of adjusting to the language and culture of the host country, while maintaining communications between different cultures. Yet when the multicultural family can overcome such difficulties, the 'intercultural competences' that it develops, the byproduct of linguistic and cultural adjustment, can be of great use. Korean husbands and in-laws, especially the mother-inlaw,usually tend to look down upon the native culture of the immigrant women. They just want the immigrant women to learn and take the role of the traditional Korean wife and daughter-in-law. This demand to assimilate to the Korean culture might destroy not only the values of the native culture of the immigrant women, but also their pride, identity and human rights. On the other hand, if Korean husbands respect the native culture of the immigrant women and seek to integrate those cultures with the Korean culture, their pride and integrity might be preserved and a new way of utilizing their native cultures as resources can be developed. With the 'intercultural competence' developed in the process of integration, the immigrant women can take the role of cultural brokers who can connect two countries. And the children of multicultural families, when raised to become a person who can talk two languages and is accustomed to the bicultural atmosphere, will have a greater chance to become global leaders in the globalized world settings. Nowadays, God's people have the responsibility and mission to discern God's providence in the globalized world where multicultural families are fastly growing. In the Bible, God sometimes commanded men to leave their home towns as are the cases of Abraham, Jonah and Paul(Gen. 12:3; Jon. 1:2; Act. 13:2). At other times, He involved in the lives of the immigrants providentially to bless the whole world through them as are the cases of Joseph, Luth and Naomi, and the captivated people of Israel(Gen. 50:20; Lut. 1:2; 1:16-17; Jer. 29:7; Dan. 6:26-27; Act. 8:1). In the Bible, God commands His people to take good care of aliens as well as exiles among them, who suffer from cultural stresses and identity crises when in marginalized situations(Lev. 19:33-34). Those immigrants have strongly felt needs to adjust to the new settings linguistically and culturally. Providing assistance to the immigrants can facilitate the adjustment processes. If God's people can be good friends with them and help them expand their social relationships with Korean people, they can make rappos and build trust. In that case, they can have many chances to share the good news about God's Kingdom to them as well as to the people who are in their transnational social field. Multicultural faimilies can be a precious channel through which God's blessing promised in the Bible(Gen. 12:3) can be spread, overcoming the linguistic as well as cultural barriers. In the age of migration, God's people must be prepared to provide practical support and build infrastructures for multicultural families in order to utilize the bicultural atmosphere as resources in the diversified world settings. To do such work more persistently and effectively they have to make partnership with the immigrant communities, government, related institutes, and companies. When that is realized, God's people can discern the actions of God in the world and participate whole heartedly in God's mission to the world.
