Western pop dance including social dance has flowed in Korea since 1920s and I made a investigation into it by newspaper Donga, Kyunghyang, and Chosun. It can be divided up into 3 categories and discussed; first ‘intellectual vanity of the intellectual class’ from 1920s to 1945; second ‘forbidden area under rebel control’ from emancipation to 1980s; third ‘ideology cultural industry of surrender and resistance’ from 1990s to the present. Pop dance looks like surrender to established, commercial culture, but development of small dance space such as rock-cafe, cola tech, dance club and lounge reinforces status of DJ and shows ideological gesture of resistance for breaking standardized culture. Social viewpoint about pop dance was considered in a hotbed of decadence owing to darkness of dance club. However, pop dance is a challenge against existing culture and finally lets Korean wave come into being. A Boundary line between challenge and decadence is kept up even now. directly-opposed two kinds is making an inseparable relation and is clashing over constantly like two sides of the same coin, and industry of pop dance is developing.

우리나라에 사교춤을 포함한 서구의 대중춤이 유입된 것은 1920년대부터인데, 이때부터 현재까지 댄스클럽에 서 행해진 대중춤에 대한 인식을 『동아일보』, 『경향신문』, 『조선일보』기사를 통해 알아보았다. 크게 세 시기로 나누어 담론화할 수 있었는데, 첫째는 1920년대부터 해방이전인 1945년까지로 대중춤은 ‘인텔리의 지적 허영’이라 할 수 있다. 둘째는 해방 후부터 1980년대까지이며, 이 시기를 ‘금단의 해방구’라 명명하였다. 셋째는 1990년대부터 현재까지이고, 이를 ‘투항과 저항의 이데올로기 문화산업’으로 보았다. 기존 상업문화에 투항하는 듯 보이지만 락카페, 콜라텍, 클럽, 라운지 등 소규모 춤 공간의 발달은 DJ의 위상 강화와 더불어 기 존 획일화된 문화에서 탈피하려는 저항의 이데올로기적 몸짓을 보이고 있다. 댄스클럽이라는 장소가 갖는 음침함 때문에 대중춤에 대한 사회적 시선은 퇴폐의 온상으로 여겨졌지만, 여기 서의 대중춤은 전통과 기존 문화에 대한 도전이었고 이것은 결국 한류를 탄생시켰다. 도전과 퇴폐의 경계선은 지금도 계속되고 있다. 상반된 두 가지가 동전의 양면처럼 불가분의 관계를 맺으며 끊임없이 충돌하면서 대중 춤 산업은 성장하고 있다.
