The purpose of this paper is to examine Toegye(退溪 李滉, 1501~1570)’s interpretation of Chungyong(中庸) who led the completion of the Chosŏn-style acceptance of Neo-Confucianism. This paper is focused on revealing the way that how he understood it according to the system of Neo-Confucianism that was proposed by Chu Hsi, rather than revealing the unique perspective of Toegye. I have the following configuration in this paper. First, I have set two directions of research for understanding of Chungyong, these were derived through the work that is an overview of cases of interpretation of Chungyong of Chosŏn. 1) How to understand the overall structure of Chungyong? 2) How to understand key concepts of Chungyong?Next, basing on these directions of research, I analyzed Toegye’s interpretation of Chungyong. To grasp the structure of the whole, Toegye followed the segmentation system and structure of Chungyong changgu: Commentary on the Doctrine of the Mean, and to understand key concepts of Chungyong, he conducted in collaboration with concepts of Neo-Confucianism. Concretely, I analyze his work : Chungyong sukŭi(中庸釋義) and Chungyong jilŭi(中庸質疑) for asserting that he accepted the segmentation system and structure of Chungyong changgu. And I analyze his documents: letters to and from his disciples. This analysis focus on concepts of Chungyong for asserting that his understanding is in the context of Chu Hsi and other Neo-Confucian scholars’s commentary. Toegye tried to reduce the diversity of interpretation and present one meaning.

본고에서는 성리학의 조선식 수용의 완성을 이끌었던 퇴계 이황(退溪 李滉, 1501~1570)이, 『중용(中庸)』을 어떤 시각 으로 보았는지, 그 해석에 대해 검토하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 작업이 중점을 두는 것은 『중용』에 대한 독자적인 퇴 계의 관점을 밝히는 것보다는 퇴계가 어떤 방식을 통해 주희(朱熹)가 제시한 성리학의 체계에 맞추어 『중용』을 이해 해 나갔는지를 밝히는 것이다. 본고는 다음의 구성을 갖는다. 먼저『중용』 이해를 위해 두 가지 연구 방향을 설정하였는데, 이 작업은 조선 시대 『중용』해석의 사례를 개괄적으로 살펴보는 작업을 통해 도출되었다. 1) 『중용』의 전체 구조를 어떻게 파악할 것인가 와 2) 『중용』 본문에 나타나는 주요 개념을 어떻게 이해할 것인가의 두 가지 연구 방향이다. 이 연구 방향을 기준으로 퇴계의 『중용』이해를 분석하였는데, 곧 퇴계의 작업은 전체 구조를 파악함에 있어 『중용장구(中庸章句)』장절(章 節) 구조와 분절 체제를 따르며, 『중용』의 주요 개념을 이해함에 있어 주희의 주석과 『중용장구대전(中庸章句大 全)』의 소주(小註)를 바탕으로 이뤄지고 있음을 밝혔다. 구체적으로 연구의 대상과 방법은, 『중용석의(中庸釋義)』와 ｢중용질의(中庸質疑)｣의 분석을 통해 구조적 측면에서 『중용장구󰡕의 구조와 분절 체제를 따르고 있음을 살폈고, 이어서 『중용장구』의 의미 단락에 근거하여 각 부분의 주요 개념들에 관한 퇴계의 논의를 살펴 주자주와 소주를 바탕으로 텍스트의 맥락 안에서 『중용』을 이해하며, 해석의 다양성을 줄이고 하나의 의미를 제시하고 있음을 밝혔다.
