This thesis is aimed at considering how a new-style novel, Binsangseol is concerned with old novels, Sassinamjeonggi and Changsungameurok and thinking its novelistic characteristic. Binsangseol is similar with Sassinamjeonggi in that a wife goes through sufferings by a concubine and comes back and with Changsungameurok in that there is the motif of change of man and woman. Binsangseol is similar with the existing novels, but it has a lot of differences with the novels, especially with Sassinamjeonggi. Description is reduced or expanded or divided or integrated. There are some changes in characters, too. In Binsangseol, husbands’ character is stronger and character of surrounding people stands out. Most of all, matchmaker, which reflects the society at that times, appears the author’s attitude to reality. In Binsangseol, character of good and evil which Sassinamjeonggi shows changes. In Sassinamjeonggi, manner is good and selling out or jealousy while in Binsangseol, prudence and patience is good and jealousy is evil. The narrator of Binsangseol shows his or her attitude to reality by excluding the unrealistic factors that show in Sassinamjeonggi and weakening punitive justice. On the other hand, he or she enhances interest and shows commercial character of the novel by accepting the motif of change of man and woman in Changsungameurok. Binsangseol shows tragic beauty and beauty from humor and satire different from the existing novels, but it is not precise.

이 글은 신소설 <빈상설>이 고전소설인 <사씨남정기>, <창선감의록>과 맺고 있는 양상을 살피고 그 소설로서의 성격 을 구명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. <빈상설>은 처가 첩에 의해 고난을 당했다 복귀한다는 서사 구조의 면에서 <사씨남 정기>와 유사하고, 작품에 삽입된 남녀환복 모티프의 양상은 <창선감의록>과 유사하다. <빈상설>은 기존 소설과 유사한 점이 있으나 한편으로는 기존 소설과 분변되는 지점 또한 적지 않은데, 특히 <사씨남 정기>와의 관계에서 그러하다. 서사가 축소, 확장되거나, 분할 혹은 통합되고 새로운 서사가 창출되기도 함으로써 여주 인공 위주의 서사에서 중층적 서사로 변화되었다. 인물 설정에서도 변화가 감지되는데 <빈상설>에서는 남편의 경솔한 성격이 부각되고, 주변인물의 활동이 강화된다. 특히 당대 사회를 반영한 뚜쟁이의 설정은 작가의 현실 인식을 강하게 반영한 것으로 해석된다. <빈상설>에서는 <사씨남정기>가 보여 주었던 선과 악의 형질이 일정하게 변화하였다. <사씨 남정기>에서는 예법이 선으로, 훼절·투기 등이 악으로 규정된 반면, <빈상설>에서는 진중하고 인고하는 모습이 선으로 형상화되고, 투기가 악으로 규정되어 있다. <빈상설>의 서술자는 <사씨남정기>에 보이던 비현실적 요소를 대폭 배제하고 인과응보 논리를 약화시킴으로써 현실 인식의 한 측면을 일정하게 보여 주고 있다. 한편으로는 <창선감의록>의 남녀환복 모티프를 과감하게 수용함으로써 흥 미를 제고하고, 소설의 상업적 성격을 드러내었다. <빈상설>은 또 기존 소설들로부터 비장미와 골계미를 아울러 섭렵 한 성과를 거두었으나 그것이 적절하게 교합되지는 못했다는 아쉬움이 있다.
