This study elucidates on the meaning of gang (强) in the “Chapter on Jaro (子路) asking Confucius about gang”, Jungyong (中庸), by examining Zhu Xi’s interpretation and Jeong Yak-yong’s. Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130-1200) interprets the term gang as overcoming one’s selfish interests; He regards the theme of “ Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” as Jaro’s yong (勇) and holds that the gang of the South or of the North is to overcome the other people, but the gang of the exemplary person (君子) is to overcome one’s selfish interests. On the other hand, Jeong Yak-yong (丁若鏞, 1762-1836) takes the meaning of gang in the “Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” differently; He interprets the term gang in general as the way in which one can make it constant, and stresses ceaseless practice of junghwa (中和) in particular, because he holds that the practice of jungyong (中庸) is impossible unless one practice junghwa constantly. Both Zhu Xi and Jeong Yak-yong understands the term gang in the “Chapter on Jaro asking Confucius about gang” as the moral conceptions that is related closely with doing jungyong. However, these two scholars have different notions about gang; The former relates it to our self-cultivation, while the latter relates it to our practice.
