Zhongli Quan was a member of the Eight Immortals which have been appeared since the Song dynasty, and the master of Lu Dongbin as well as the second place founder of Perfect Realization Daoism. He began to be appeared in various texts during the Northern Song dynasty and was settled as the master of Lu Dongbin since the Yuan dynasty. And he completed internal alchemy together with Lu Dongbin. As novels have become popular during the Ming dynasty, the story of the Eight Immortals was created as novels. Accordingly the story of Zhongli Quan was rather materialized and flourished in novels. In the Ming dynasty novels Zhongli Quan was the master of Lu Dongbin, a religious leader who qualified the Immortal candidates through tests and encouraged to practice merit and good deeds and a specialist of internal alchemy. In addition as the spiritual leader of the Eight Immortals he controlled Ludongbin and guided the Immortals behind the scenes. Furthermore, he made a pair with Lu Dongbin and even enlightened Hanxiangzi. He was also portrayed as an immortal representing Daoism who was against Confucianism. As a divine religious leader, Zhongli Quan's character was in contrast with Lu Dongbin's and kept its vitality up to now through the Qing dynasty. It's being welcomed by people as of today.
