This study aims at discussing a view of the world and the providence of nature on the birth tales of old novels focused on . Birth tales of old novels have the idea of rewarding virtue and punishing vice that it was not included in the heroic novel and myth. This principle is related to the mind of touching God and people with one’s utmost, the idea of punitive justice, principle that son and daughter receive good fortune because of virtue of parents and the belief in Karma. Myth does not have the principle of rewarding virtue and punishing vice when it was analyzed on the ground of this idea. The sacred birth tale of hero put in the center of narration to build a country through the idea that sacred and profane world are same. In folk tales, the idea of rewarding virtue and punishing vice was not included but it has an interest of revealing patriotic world view through the hero’s sacred birth. However, in the old novels, it is emphasized on communication between sacred world and real world like the transcendental response to the man’s utmost effort and well-doing so that the theme is focused on rewarding virtue and punishing vice. Considering of this point, old novels’ birth tale is not the only conventional part that has a ritualized function. Myth of hero and birth tale of heroic narrative has a purpose to focus on the effective results of building a country or hero’s remarkable activities. On the other hand, the birth tale of old novels has a characteristic to show a theme that good luck and goodness in harmony effects on the next generations and the hero was born as a result of it realize the idea of rewarding virtue and punishing vice. and were discussed as works that reveal the characteristic very well. Birth tale of has a motive to save the lives relating to ‘good luck and goodness’ from the principle of good luck and goodness in harmony more than the idea of rewarding virtue and punishing vice. But unlike , has a characteristic that birth tale unfolds with an equal importance about the idea of good luck and goodness in harmony and rewarding virtue and punishing vice. And it has a difference that Yoochoongyeol is the main agent realizing th eprinciple of good luck and goodness in harmony and the idea of rewarding virtue and punishing vice.

이 논문은 <숙향전>을 중심으로 하여 고소설 인물 출생담에 나타난 세계관과 자연의 섭리를 논의하는 데 목 적을 두고 있다. 고소설 인물 출생담에는 신화나 영웅설화에 나타나지 않는 복선화음과 권선징악의 이치가 담 겨 있다. 이 두 가지의 이치는 誠感之理와 因果應報之理, 親子感應에 의한 지속의 논리, 三世業報와 지속의 논 리와 관련을 맺고 나타난다. 이러한 이치에 따라 작품을 분석해 보면, 신화의 경우에는 복선화음이나 권선징악의 이치가 나타나지 않는다. 대신 주인공의 신성한 출생이 聖俗一如의 세계관을 통해 건국을 하는 데 서사의 중심이 놓인다. 그리고 설화 의 경우에도 복선화음이나 권선징악의 이치가 나타나지 않는다. 대신 주인공의 신이한 출생을 통해 호국의 세 계관을 드러내는 데 관심이 있다. 하지만 고소설의 경우에는 인간의 福善(積善)과 인간의 지극한 정성에 대한 초월계의 감응이라는 聖俗 소통의 세계관이 강조되고, 이를 통해 복선화음과 권선징악이라는 주제의식이 강 조되는 것으로 나타난다. 이런 점에서 고소설 출생담은 단순히 의례적 기능이나 서두를 장식하는 관습적 장치가 아니라는 것이 확인된 다. 신화 속 건국영웅이나 영웅설화의 출생담은 건국이나 주인공의 영웅적 활약과 같은 실질적인 결과를 강조 하는데 목적이 있다. 이에 비해 고소설 출생담의 경우에는 복선화음의 이치가 다음 세대에 영향을 미치며, 그 결과 탄생한 주인공이 다시 복선화음의 이치를 현실적으로 실현하여 권선징악의 주제를 드러낸다는 특징이 있는 것이다. 이를 잘 드러내고 있는 작품이 바로 <숙향전>과 <유충렬전>과 같은 작품이었음을 논의해 보았 다. 논의의 결과 <숙향전>에 나타난 출생담은 권선징악보다는 복선화음 중 ‘복선'과 밀접한 관련을 가지면서 사 람을 살리는 相生의 기제로 작용하고 있었다. 그리고 <유충렬전>은 인물의 출생담이 복선화음과 권선징악 각 각에 대등한 비중을 두고 전개된다는 점에서 <숙향전>과 차이가 있고, 복선화음과 권선징악의 주체가 주인공 유충렬이라는 점 또한 특징적이었다.
