This thesis aims to compare and analyze the influence of the Japanese colonial domination on the two famous authors Liang Shanding and Ahn Soogil as well as their reaction towards the domination through the exploration of the main ideas expressed in their novels, meanwhile, it also focuses on their realistic awareness and the ideal world that they pursued. He describes in his novels created in the period of Manchuria, the tragic life of the people living in the colonized Northeast China with a realistic approach , which is called the “the howl from darkness”. Liang Shanding, who had lived in the colonized area for thirty years, is opposed to the literary works praising the Japanese aggression. In his representative novels, such as 「Narrow Street」,「In the Smelly Fog」, 『Green Valley』, he shows his advocation to the local literary which portraits or reveals the reality. The works of Ahn Soogil written in the period of Manchuria is regarded as ‘the Record and Gando Report' of the life of immigration . Having lived in Longjing and Changchun together with his family for twenty years, he describes the life of the Korean immigrants based on his life experience in his representative works, such as 「Rice Plant」,「Mokchookgi」,『Bukhyangbo』Liang Shanding and Ahn Soogil explore Manchu under the domination of Japan and the question about how the nation can survive in their novels. Liang Shanding pays much attention to the people who led a hard life under the triple oppression of the Japanese colonialists, the feudal and the warlord class. He also exposes the possible ways aiming to break the fetter of the feudal thought characterized by fatalism and resignation that the lower class should choose under the Japanese rule. In order to break the shackle on the mind of the lower class people in the Manchu area, Shanding advocates the spirit of resistance. He presents the changing process from awakening to resisting of the lower class people through the altering of the figures in his novels, such as the couple in the novel 「Narrow Street」who led a resigned life and at last died tragically, Lu Dage in 「In the Smelly Fog」believing in fatalism was killed by the gunner who served for the landlord, Tie Zhu who was discontented with the Japanese colonist and stood up to fight against them personally as well as the ‘big bear paw' in his novel 『Green Valley』who unites the public to resist the Japanese invaders. The changing of the figures shows the thoughts of the authors who appeal to the public to wake up and defend their homeland, which is presented through the spirit of resistance shown by the peasants in Langgou when assaulted by the horse gang. The rebellious spirit based on the ‘The spirit of Old roots' referring to guard their homeland or their root is the reflection of ‘The Langgou spirit'. As the establishment of Manchuria, the politics and social environment began to deteriorate, so Ahn Soogil turned his eyes on the tuff living condition of the Koreans in China, he tries to expose as well as put forward his own view on the question that how the Koreans, as aliens, facing the transformation of the society, survive the hostile environment. In his novels, such as 「Mokchookgi」, 『Bukhyangbo』, Ahn Soogil describes the construction of the ‘ideal village' and the ‘the beautiful second hometown'. As their road of returning back to their own country was cut off, so their sense of urgency about how to settle down rises with the time passing by. As a result, their awareness of Chinese people and Manchu had a great change. In order to survive, they made up their mind to settle down in Manchu. Ahn Soogil depicts this kind of people who could adapt himself to the social reality and get on well with the Chinese natives harmoniously in his literary works, such as the representative characters: the landlord Bakjiwon in「Rice Plant」, Lao Song in 「Mokchookgi」, Pan Chenggui in 『Bukhyangbo』and the Korean intellectuals as Chansu, Chan-ho and Mr Jiang in his novels. In 『Bukhyangbo』, Ahn Soogil shows their thought of settling down through the description of the mutual respect and the harmonious coexistence between the Korean immigrants and the Chinese people. The approach put forward by Ahn Soogil in his novels that the Korean immigrants adopt to settle down in the Manchu area are ‘the soul of rice farming' and ‘The spirit of a northern hometown'.
